So tomorrow begins The Morning News’ Tournament of Books (which is their version of March Madness - except, you know, for Book Nerds). You can find the bracket here. Some of the more well known judges (for me, at least) include: Colin Meloy, The Decemberist’s lead singer; Sasha Frere-Jones, music critic for the New Yorker; and book blogger Maud Newton.
I really cannot say much about who I think will win (as that I have only read five out of the 16 books (Pynchon’s Against the Day, Richard Powers’ The Echo Maker, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Colin Whitehead’s Apex Hides the Hurt, and Gary Shteyngart’s Absurdistan)). If last year’s winner is any indicator (Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell’s postmodern travel through time), they will probably go to something postmodern and sprawling. I am rooting for Absurdistan, but it is probably too humourous/quirky for this bracket - sigh.
