that’s a no win. He spends his own money and it looks like a naked purchase of political support.
he just thinks gays should be left up to the states, and not subsidized by the federal government.
Does anyone know of a good web resource for following this election once the polls open? I don’t have cable and the US news networks’ websites are all region locked.
The win would be to use all those reporters that are traveling with you to report Red Cross and other charities constantly for the next few days rather than do it at a single event.
Major reporting on exit polling has pretty much been squashed since the Gore v. Bush debacle, iirc, so most sites you find will likely be limited in nature. Any major newspaper site will likely have something to go off of, and I liked the NYT coverage from the primaries (here’s an example).
Dick Morris is predicting a Romney landslide and a 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate! You can confidently buy those InTrade futures now.
No, he just reiterated his earlier point that he would not abolish FEMA, contrary to what some people are trying to attribute to him. Just look at the article you linked: Why would they quote the headline of the Huffington Post article, instead of the part where Romney himself said he would shut it down? Because Romney never actually said it, but the headline was worded to imply that he did.

Ya, quoting the title of an article seems pretty weird.

Yes, bullshit indeed.
See, the HuffPo article, as well as that one, post a clip from youtube… but the clip ends prior to the moderator injecting that question. I wonder why?
Here’s the clip of that whole exchange. (funny enough, apparently recorded by ThinkProgress)
That’s not quite the same thing that the text you posted there suggests, is it Jason? That second part of Romney’s speech isn’t actually a separate answer to the moderator. It’s just a continuation of the longer statement, essentially ignoring the moderator’s injection of the question in the middle of his statement.
Romney’s making a fairly broad, vague, politician-y statement about taking power from the federal government and giving it to the states. He doesn’t make any statement suggesting the abolishment of FEMA.
We like games, right? How about this one?
Make Romney’s Tax Plan Add Up
Have fun!

“I’m tired of Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney!”
What are we doing to the children of our country?!!? ;)
But the second part of the speech had nothing to do with the first part and it’s all lies and Benghazi and stuff!
Sorry, couldn’t resist. ;)
You realize the implication of this response is:
“Well, the other side is dishonest and sleazy, so we’re justified in being dishonest and sleazy too!”, right?
I find that attitude boggling. If the other side is dishonest and sleazy, your side should care even more about being forthwith and beyond reproach to spotlight the difference as strongly as possible.
Transcript.
KING: What else, Governor Romney? You’ve been a chief executive of a state. I was just in Joplin, Missouri. I’ve been in Mississippi and Louisiana and Tennessee and other communities dealing with whether it’s the tornadoes, the flooding, and worse. FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we’re learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?
ROMNEY: Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better.
Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut -- we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in. We cannot...
KING: Including disaster relief, though?
ROMNEY: We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all.
King directly asks him about FEMA at the start, I’m not sure how much clearer it can be. “Romney didn’t actually mean it, he was just bullshitting and ignoring the two questions” is a hilarious interpretation.

Yeah… he asked him directly about FEMA at the start. And then Romney gave a speech about vaguely related stuff.
It’s almost like he was in a debate, and didn’t exactly answer the question asked. That’s crazytalk!
Except for the part about context you might be right.
Most people I know don’t divorce context from reality.
He does say “Everytime we can strip a power from the federal government and give it to the states, we should.” (Or something very similar.) So have you seen specific evidence that he believes FEMA is not a power that you “can” strip from the federal government and give to the states? If so, what is his rationale for that, and can you point me toward a location where he gives some idea of how he would decide?
If the idea is one of marginal efficiency, then he’s already on record as saying the states are more agile responders to state-based issues, so why is it unreasonable for me to read the above statement with the tacked on “Therefore we should abolish FEMA and let the states handle it?” Has he given any qualifiers on the states being able to handle this stuff on their own?
Yes it was smarmy, and childish.
But I just wanted to piss off Timex, we all have to get our kicks somehow.
Technically timex is right, but Romney definitely insinuated that he would get rid of FEMA. Regardless, Kerry got beat to all hell for being a flip-flopper (I can still hear Bush’s voice when I see those words). It is amazing how the republicans are giving Romney a pass on this. I just don’t understand.
