SC voters are kind of nuts.

I wonder if it will actually get to the point where some high-population states make a difference in who determining who gets the nomination? Speaking of which, I wonder why the high-population states don’t move their dates back at least to “super tuesday”, if not before?

Hahahahaha

Thinking that Gingrich is more electable than Romney in November indicates a serious disconnect from reality*. Those respondents should go back on their meds.

*which of course has a well-known liberal bias.

While a series of Gingrich-Obama debates would be interesting, I have no intention of voting republican if Gingrich is running for the party of “family values”. I can choke down Romney, but not Gingrich.

I know a lot of Republicans who would rather stay home than vote for Gingrich. Republicans who really don’t like Obama. Even after hearing him sing Al Green.

I suspect the higher ups in the GOP party also consider it to be a nightmare scenario to have Newt as the nominee.

And that’s the beauty of this year’s Republican field (from a Dem perspective). You’ve got the religious bigots who won’t vote for a Mormon, the people who won’t vote for Mitt because he’s “not a real Conservative” on social issues, and on the other side you’ve got wingnuts who like Santorum’s politics BUT he’s a Catholic so you have the religious bigot problem again. Gingrich isn’t quite so crazy theocratic on social issues and is a “real conservative” but again, he’s a (converted) Catholic, a serial adulterer/divorcé, and has a scandal-ridden past. Paul has positions way outside of the GOP mainstream on some issues (defense, abolishing the Fed) so he’s out. Whoever wins the nomination, any way you slice it, some substantial portion of GOP voters is going to stay home, write in someone else’s name or vote third party.

The only way this doesn’t happen is if gas goes substantially higher this summer and unemployment starts going up again (both quite possible).

The Dems win again short of the recession jump starting again or Obama just going off the deep end. Although I still think Romney has a chance, but he is the only republican with a chance.

Yeah, but every week this drags on and he has to spend money to campaign against Gingrich instead of Obama hurts him. Had he won in SC he’d probably be on top of the polls in Florida, and it’d be all but over.

I’m still a bit puzzled why Perry immediately supported Gingrich after dropping out. He must have some kind of ax to grind with Romney.

What i’m hearing around conservative circles is the phrase “shouldn’t we be willing to forgive? Can’t people change?” And also, “What does his personal life have to do with the national stage?”

One factor, a pretty big factor, has been these debates. There has grown a sense that they are filled with loaded question intended in bad faith to submarine whatever candidate is in the crosshairs, instead of debating “politics”; the Juan Williams thing has especially given some major brownie points to Gingritch in many conservatives’ eyes. For me, the insanity of nearly weekly debates has made me utterly indifferent to them, but conservatives are watching with great interest and the shifts in tone and character within the context of them has been the driving force in the ebb and flow of the political cycle.

Why does Romney get the pass on electability though? The guy has been running for this nomination for 6+years. You’d think he or someone in his braintrust would be able to formulate a reasonable response to the Bain Capital/“vulture capitalist” charge, but he’s still fumbling it. And among Republicans who revere vulture capitalists.

I’m really not so sure about his electability.

According to the exit polls, Romney lost all South Carolinian income brackets save the $200,000+ a year crowd

Where’s that “Michael Jackson eating popcorn” gif when you need it? ;-)

Rick Santorum, hoping to reach around obstacles and shock and awe the contest from behind, has announced the Conservatives Unite Moneybomb: https://www.ricksantorum.com/unite/

Apparently “Support Proper Observation of Good Economics” was taken.

That C.U.M. thing HAS to be parody, no?

Have you been watching the trainwreck that is the GOP race? That should tell you everything you need to know.

Carville having some fun with the mess:

At any rate, let’s talk a minute about Mitt. He was your guy – he was methodical, meticulous, married once. He has completely blown himself up over an issue that everyone knew was coming. Have you had a chance to look at John McCain’s research operation on Mitt? Wow. And let me assure you, that thing has been supplemented, expanded, and annotated. God only knows about the Obama people – they’ve got a billion dollars! And how about my friends over at American Bridge (the Democrat-leaning political action committee)? Clearly Mitt is merely in the beginning of this tax-return, financial-disclosure, Cayman Island (and God only knows what else) fiasco.

If this was a fair and just world Santorum would be finished as of now.

Don’t a large number of Republicans believe this in a basic way? Maybe the majority aren’t quite so… extreme about it, but most seem to say they would at least greatly push a relative to not get an abortion if raped using much the same argument.

If we start getting rid of republican presidential candidates who make public statements about wanting to push their religious values on others who might not share their beliefs, this is going to be a one party race more often than not.

Although… Santorum is probably the only one of the two candidates who seems to actually believe what he is saying, as opposed to just making a bunch of statements to appease the Religious Right and then (likely) forgetting about them except when it comes to blocking gay rights issues.

I’m pro-choice, but I think Santorum is being consistent. If you believe that a zygote represents a life that no one, even the mother, has the right to terminate, than it shouldn’t matter how that zygote came to be. He’s saying that a zygote is a human life and a human life deserves protection.

Anyway, isn’t Santorum finished? Is there any scenario in which he gets the nomination?

I think Santorum’s views are appalling, but they’re more respectable than the “pro-life unless I think it’s a good enough reason” crowd.
