Isn’t OCD a mental illness?
I have an impulse to count the letters in words I see on signs, billboards, and generally around the world. It’s not overpowering, but it’s always there. My therapist said I didn’t need to worry about it too much. I’m self-diagnosing as mild OCD.
Just thought I’d share that!

I believe the correct term is mental health disorder, however, OCD does not make someone racist although I can see with Roseanne out there trying very hard to sell that why someone else might try something similar.
OCD does not make you a racist asshole with the need to dismiss the issues of black people or ask them questions like you’ve just stepped off a spaceship. That’s just racism and a small world view.
Even though I live in a state with mailed votes. I think the state owes the voters more efforts to let someone know they might be losing their ability to vote based on no other reason than them not voting with just one postcard. They manage to track people down pretty well when they owe money, so I’m sure they can track someone down too. I don’t know that I fully by the reasoning behind this since it hurts the poor more than others.
OCD is a legitimate mental health issue, and I know folks severely afflicted by it.
That said, Nesrie is correct, OCD – nor any other mental health issue, really – makes you a racist.
Not everyone who thinks police brutality is overblown is racist, actually. Some people are very tired of police shootings being misrepresented so blatantly, without regard for facts or statistical context. Those people aren’t necessarily bad people. But you just are content to assume you know everyone’s motivations, and at the same time call out others for a “small world view”? Rich.
The OCD comment had to do with my habit for promptly responding. Nothing to do with the content of the posts, which so greatly mortify you for some reason. Well…actually I can think of some reasons – but I won’t claim to know your motivation, which is the big difference between you and me.
Yes, but we were only talking about OCD because he brought up mental illness to score points in an internet argument. No ad hominem is too low for people here who do not want their viewpoints challenged.
I suspect I will soon be blamed for mentioning OCD in this thread, even though another poster raised the issue and mocked me for being “mentally ill.” Ding ding: @Timex wins!

Do you count the number of letters in your posts, or is that different?
No, I don’t do it with anything I write, nor typically with longer texts (like books I read). It has to be short texts like signs, headers, titles, chapter names, that sort of thing.

Have we decided whether or not this tool is JBG?
Just for interest, I looked up the level of voter fraud here in Australia, where it’s literally an honour system in place to prevent people voting multiple times (eg. there is no checking of IDs, you just state that you have not already voted).
In our 2013 national election, there were 8,000 cases of suspected voter fraud, out of 12.7 million total votes. So about 6 hundredths of 1% (Source). Which doesn’t seem like much of an issue.
Amusingly, a common excuse for voting twice was being drunk… :)
I was always told a nice rule of thumb for mental illness is it’s generally not one if it does not impact your quality of life / mood negatively. I always thought OCD was a purely learned condition (and the serotonin link questionable), but this rather dramatic treatment involving an attempted shotgun to the head would suggest otherwise:

Jesus fuck, get out of here with this bullshit. Go make some other thread to talk about your OCD.

Haha, they forgot they voted?

All but confirmed it when asked why he came back after being banned.

That explains my visceral distaste then.
I have no idea who you are, when I talked to you, or what I “all but confirmed,” (which sounds very similar to saying something is confirmed but … not?). I’m wary of saying anything in this thread that’s remotely off-topic now, since I am now also being blamed for daring to respond to someone who claimed I was “mentally ill.” If you were banned, I’m sorry to hear that. If you’re asking if I have ever been banned, the answer is yes, for a ~12-24 hour period in early May. This is, again, off topic, so I hope no one snaps at me for responding to your off-topic post.

I honestly think what he’s doing here is some kind of compulsive behavior that’s not healthy and not good for him. People who are content with their lives don’t have a need to get attention through spending a large part of their day trolling on the internet. Maybe I was sneering a bit, but it was not at his mental illness, it was at his belief that he’s the winner here by getting a rise out of so many people.
Trying to argue with him isn’t good for us and it’s not good for him either.
While I appreciate and agree with much of the sentiment, I was let down that this was done in a controlled environment. I expected to see him getting sprayed while protesting on his own time or something. Right now this just seems like the cinnamon challenge 2.0, or Jackass.
Will a covered helmet/mask nullify the effect of the spray?
Today is primary day in my congressional district. In VA, the primaries are held on different days in different districts if they are held at all (some incumbents are running unopposed; other districts hold conventions, etc.).
For this one (the VA 10th), we have six people vying to be the one to run against the super-vulnerable Barbara Comstock. Comstock herself has a right-wingnut challenger, and I guess the GOP has three guys who are competing to run against Tim Kaine for the Senate seat.
I’m taking a short break from manning the Dem booth outside my polling place. Our local Dems aren’t endorsing anyone, but we’re hoping to sign up some volunteers and also to show the flag a bit.
Turnout seems pretty strong. It’s at least twice what the traffic was for last year’s primary… which - granted - was an off-off-year primary, but it was a pretty heavily competed gubernatorial primary race.
Nice day for it to. This is the fourth time I’ve done the polling-booth thing and the first time it hasn’t rained on me.
