As someone who sees Spanish surnames all day long I can tell you that they are a real pain in the ass. Not just for me, as their names in the computers here are mixed up messes, but for them, because their names are mixed up messes. I see them list their full names and then in signing they drop a name or two. They don’t consistently use the same name combination, as it were, resulting in their names being totally screwed up. I am sure it costs them time and money when dealing with any government or financial institution.
Also, their kids names don’t match. It just isn’t a practice that works in the modern computer age.
Admittedly, in the US they should just hyphenate the names if they want to keep with tradition. And the fields in the software should be long enough to accommodate that.
I myself don’t sign with Hulse Zirión or its hyphenated variant but that’s because in the 1960s in the US (when I started school) it would just not have flown anyway. Also because the first surname is English (alternative theory: a truncated version of a longer Dutch or Flemish name).

Everyone knows how to say Cortez, I suspect is the reason.
Watching talking heads fuck up Ocasio all day would be fun, but they’re not gonna bite on that I don’t think.
A good friend of mine’s name spans 6 discrete words. And she has indeed used different combinations of them over the years in different contexts, making things extra-special confusing for everyone involved (e.g., whole groups of friends who exclusively know her by a nickname she hasn’t used in a decade). It’s awesome ;-)

Deficits through spending is more conservative than deficits through tax cuts, purely because of the multiplier. And deficits shrunk every year for the first six years of Obama’s term in office. During his second term, deficits were lower as a percentage of GDP than at any point during–say–Reagan’s Presidency. Without doubt, over the last 4 decades, Democrats have 100% been the more fiscally conservative party. But somehow are seen as profligate and irresponsible spenders–a huge propaganda victory for the supply-siders on the right. I think it’s time for Democrats to earn their badge of profligacy and wear it proudly. Push those high-income tax brackets into the stratosphere and give us Medicare for All, universal basic income, a robust investment in future-proofing our infrastructure, and a solid investment in energy science and medical research.

So how is it pronounced? Is it “Oh-Kah-See-Oh”?
Basically-- the stress is on the “a” and the last two vowels are pronounced as one syllable. So, Oh-kah-syoh
It’s just like Ric Ocasic, except a little different because that last c is closed off.

The Republicans actually balanced the budget in the 90s. That is a non trivial achievement.

PAYGO was established by Democrats in 1990. The BBA was an extension of that legislation. Then Republicans broke PAYGO apart in 2002 in order to cut taxes. Democrats re-enacted it as a House rule in 2007, then as law in 2010. Republicans passed special exemptions to PAYGO in order to pass the 2017 tax cut. Democrats have consistently been fiscal hawks. Republicans are only fiscal hawks during Democratic administrations. For Democrats, fiscal conservativism is sound policy. For Republicans, it’s just a political cudgel.

Facts should be hard to refute, but these days the GOP seems to do it anyway.

He makes good points.
I don’t agree on the general “civility” argument, but I get where he’s going and he’s probably right.
Uh, no.
I’ll leave it at that.
Nice piece. I think he is utterly wrong but I appreciate where he is coming from. He fails to answer the simple question of who loses if normal Americans start being as rude as trump supporters? he makes general hand wavey arguments about the role of government, but thats irrelevant in getting out the vote. There is going to be zero new trump voters just because normal americans are rude to Sanders or any other trump scumbags. There may however be more democratic voters. Rage energizes. I say get angry and stay angry. because the trump regimes threat to the United States is well worth getting angry about.
