2017: Whither Democrats?

You’re right that Bernie accurately identified her weakness, and he did so early. The problem is that he went on to exacerbate it, convincing a substantial portion of the Democratic party that she and Trump were equally evil. This served his interest, and perhaps that of the progressive wing. But it also gave us President Trump.

It’s clear to me, though, that the Dems need to embrace a nakedly populist direction. “Medicare for All. College Education for All. Higher Taxes on People Who Aren’t You,” seem like the themes. I’d also like to see them demagogue the fuck out of the idea that “The GOP is happy to let your kids die so they can pay less in taxes.” Not strictly true, but who cares anymore.

Thanks Trump!

and meanwhile Nancy Pelosi is saying single payer should not be part of the Dem platform for 2018. She’s part of the problem too.

Well, I’d blame social media, the fractured ‘choose-your-own-news’ media market, the human tendency toward confirmation bias and the American electorate’s general lack of interest in policy. But Trump’s a pretty good metaphor for all that, true ;)

Let’s just call it shorthand for the lesson learned from 2016 -

Trump is a liar;
Trump won the presidency;
Therefore to win, we must lie.

We should make and sell “Jesus : The only Socialist Liberal Conservatives ever liked.” t-shirts.

It’s the Transitive Property of Bullshit.

It’s awfully convenient for you to peddle Trump’s lies like “Crooked Hillary” (masqueraded with a different term like “corrupt”) while also acknowledging that Trump is a sociopathic liar.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, the “corrupt Hillary” meme is just another manufactured GOP lie much like the Benghazi bullshit and exaggerated nonsense about her email server?

Have you really, truly sat down to figure out what specifically makes Hillary “corrupt” in your eyes? That maybe you’re just assuming as obvious “fact” what the GOP has been trying to make people believe - without evidence - for literally decades?

That’s my entire point. That’s why I strongly a confidently proclaim fuck Bernie Sanders for continuing to perpetuate this GOP-manufactured idea that Hillary is nothing more than a corrupt elite. Fuck Bernie Sanders for refusing to acknowledge Hillary’s liberal voting record, and how she’s fought for women and children and other underprivileged groups for her entire life, especially as First Lady and Senator.

Important note: Just because I genuinely will never forget Bernie Sanders for being a fucking asshole, I’m not blaming him entirely for her loss. It’s actually possible to simultaneously hold multiple beliefs like “Bernie Sanders helped Donald Trump win” and “Hillary Clinton made a bunch of dumb mistakes that helped her lose” and “James Comey was the most effective tool the GOP could have ever hoped for in swinging to election to a Trump win”

I’m not sure “The GOP is happy to let your kids die so they can pay less in taxes.” is a lie. I’m pretty sure this is the truth.

I have zero interest in someone like Trump and his goons controlling my ability to get healthcare. If it were up to them, women’s healthcare would be excluded entirely. I don’t want SP in this climate. We’re not ready for it.

Plus the best response to sad sack Joe is that so many people are going ‘pay your child support’. Guy is a loser, and an asshole.

Thanks for this. It has really annoyed me that so many people label Clinton as corrupt without giving any reason.

It may annoy you, but that’s what many people thought of her, and you can’t win election as a Democrat that way.

I don’t fucking give a shit what “many people thought of her”.

This is about what you think of her. And I was responding to you.

TIL that not rolling over and kissing the Clinton ring whilst appropriately tugging one’s forelock in humble submission makes you a traitor to the party. Which is a mortal sin.

We’re so screwed. Rational Democrats in a generally friendly mutual community can’t even discuss disagreements on policies civilly. It’s going to be Bernie vs. Hillary all over again.

I got news for everyone, neither Hillary nor Bernie is perfect. They both lost and the GOP will eat the Democrats alive if the all or nothing crowd keeps demanding, all or nothing.

I actually think trying to an all-or-nothing attitude like this is part of the problem. We couldn’t pass single payer when we had control of everything. We need blue dog Democrats, centrist democrats, moderate democrats, neoliberals, everyone.

I don’t want everything so much as a candidate who doesn’t take money from Wall Street and Big Pharma. I honestly can’t remember if Bernie did anymore, and my addled mind thinks it remembers Hillary did, but can we just be the party that turns away money in politics? I realize this sounds naive but it was related to why Hillary lost, even if unfairly.

You want to be the party that has no money so the GOP can outspend the Democrats 10 x 1 on the hopes that the youngest members, who often don’t vote, will make up the difference?. That feels like a disaster in the making.

Why Wall Street and Big Pharm anyway. Is oil okay? What about coal. Are we allowed to take money from Milk or is it just the GOP talking points we have to turn away from?

At least the Republicans wait until they get elected to office before they rip each other to shreds.
