2017: Whither Democrats?

And he kept asking the dems to come up with a plan…

And that is a feature somehow?

Now, I’ll stipulate that Warren could have Alzheimer for several years and still be smarter than Trump at his best. But has been pointed out Trump sounds noticeably dumber today than he did 10 years ago.

If Warren was re-elected she leave office at age of 79. She might be sharp as the tack, but there is a significant risk that she start losing some of her mental acuity before then.

I think the ideal age for a President to enter the office is between 45 and 65. Now there are obviously many exceptions but why take the chance electing somebody to the highest office in the land past the mandatory retirement age for most organizations?

FWIW, you’re not alone. I cannot bring myself to call trump anything other than trump (or my SO’s favorite moniker, Dolt 45.) Look at media coverage of Hitler in the 30’s before the war started and the (obviously now) desperate attempts at normalizing him:

The Kingston Daily Freeman, Kingston, New York, March 11, 1936:

A new Hitler appeared in the Fuehrer’s recent interview with a Parisian journalist, a peaceful and cooperative Hitler…. The only remarkable thing is that Hitler, after so much belligerent oratory, comes simply and frankly to this point [that Germany wants peace with France]. He has taken what is, for him, a great step forward. But historically it is a step backward—back to the enlightened statesmanship of Stresseman… If Hitler is sincere now, he can be forgiven many things, and may save European civilization.

The Washington Post, Feb. 1, 1939:

There was a lot of the traditional Hitler in his address. There was all of the bigotry, the stridency, the fanaticism, distortion, and ignorance which are inseparable from the man. But there was also a new Hitler, speaking defensively and not offensively, who for the first time sought the understanding of the democratic powers. … The speech is extraordinary in its frankness. And it may prove of the greatest importance in its results. Qualified optimism is obviously justified as a result of Hitler’s latest speech.

You all got mad at me for continuing to use the Drumpf plug in. Make Donald Drumpf again was such a fun slogan :cry

The ironic thing is that these candidates being called too old get basically all of the young vote.

Being old guard democrat has almost nothing to do with age.

A new Hitler appeared in the Fuehrer’s recent interview with a Parisian journalist, a peaceful and cooperative Hitler….

Yeah I seem to recall from my Shirer that 1936 was when Hitler unveiled his kinder gentler self, partly to synchronize with the Olympics.

“Medicare for All” is good framing. ‘Single Payer’ or ‘Socialized medicine’ is scary, but people know Medicare and roughly what it does.

I’d vote for Al Franken for president.
He does his homework, and actually takes governing seriously.

Hey @triggercut I’ve been up your ass about various things in P&R over the last year or so, but I wanted to say that I really appreciate pointing out co-sponsorship of a DOA Senate bill and how that could very well point out a shift in Democratic leadership’s view of healthcare legislation.

Reading over that it seems like it could be read in a sarcastic tone, but I intend it to be taken at face value. Thank you for your contributions to P&R /cheers

It’s clear I think the Dems have decided Medicare for all is the way to go- and it makes sense.

The only danger is it might scare seniors, but they’re already voting Republican heavily, and old folks tend to not change their minds.

The only danger is it might scare seniors, who are already enrolled in Medicare, but who think that expanding it to anyone else is socialism.

Right back atcha.

(HRC at the Trump inaugural)

“wannabe Javert” is pretty good.

As long as we’re on the topic, it annoyed me that on last week’s ‘Real Time w/ Bill Maher’ the panel all back-patted themselves for about 5 minutes about how Hillary should move on and they don’t want to rehash it, etc.

So don’t read the fucking book. She’s a private citizen, she can do what she goddamn wants, at least until they lock her up for her emails.

like.

In 2020 news, CA probably will moving up their primary.
On the one hand, that’s good for CA to finally exercise what should be their enormous political clout. OTOH that will clobber anyone who cannot raise huge sums of money.

That may be Bernie’s lasting legacy on progressives and liberals – he pushed the Democrats to a point where Single Payer is now an on-the-table thing, and a must-support to win the nomination.

I think that was his goal all along. If he somehow managed to pull off a victory against all odds, so much the better.

Unloading the pressure from employers to provide insurance is just all kinds of good, imho. Of course, we’ll probably see some layoffs in HR departments and private health insurance providers if that happens.

I saw HR departments just as large when I lived in single payer countries as I do here in the U.S. I think those folks will be fine. I don’t have a sense of the effect on insurance company employees.

I also wouldn’t expect anyone to see a pay bump after their employer stops eating 30% of their salary in insurance-related costs, but I would expect a lot of nice CEO pay raises!
