Actually, they have the same origin. While The Last Federation was being developed, the combat part of it was bullet hell/real time, but it wasn’t working well in the context of the game. Then Chris decided to change combat in The Last Federation into the turn-based system that is there in the game now, but he liked the real-time combat - so he turned that into a new game, but kept most of the look-and-feel of the graphical assets, and that became Starward Rogue. So they look a lot similar in many ways.
They’re both good games. Starward Rogue actually works better than The Last Federation - it’s a much more “rounded” experience - but both games are worth playing in my opinion.
