I missed that game. That screenshot does it no favors! :P
In the game’s defense I was going more for difficulty than aesthetics! That said, it is from 2007.
As the man said, Let Mortal Kombat… begin!

All good guesses, but no! This is a particular shade of alien purple.
Not Star Control 2! Strong guess though.

Winner winner chicken dinner!

Moonbase Commander is a bit of an odd duck. It was made by Humongous as an internal project for the developers to play at lunch. Humongous was - and still is - known primarily for their edutainment titles. The game combines base building, tactics, and combat in a turn-based/real-time hybrid. Moonbase Commander is a strange departure from Putt-Putt Goes to the Fair! It’s a lot of fun multiplayer, although launching your expensive base onto a crater edge and having it blow up can be rage inducing! For $6 you could do a lot worse.
I remember the shocking number of rave reviews at the time. It was weird for a game to come out of nowhere (or at least, from a very unexpected source) like that, in the era before indies.
I bought it and tried it a number of times and it was fun, but I think it never totally stuck because I didn’t have friends to play multiplayer with.
Guess I have to find a screen. Will try to have something up before the end of the day.

Great game. I remember finding one (password-based?) puzzle way too obscure to get without cheating, but aside from that I thought it was well written, interesting and very evocative of the late nineties web.
Ok, next up:
