I mean The Shape of Water is a film where a dude gets shot in the cheek and then another dude reaches into the hole and drags him around by it. An aquarium explosion fits right in.

If you know a bit of German, you can listen to this architect explain that, at worst, you perhaps could puncture the dome a bit with a gun and some water would leak, but you âcould not make it burstâ and âsuch kind of Hollywood scenarios or worst-case scenarios could not happen here.â

Thatâs what Iâve been wondering about, I have to think thereâs no way this is made from anything considered âglassâ that would be susceptible to a running failure like a fracture line. But then, massive pressures, massive weight might make advanced polycarbs or whatever behave the same way at the far end of the scale. I canât come up with a way to cause it to dramatically fail that wouldnât require lengthy sabotage along a bunch of different axes.

I cannot recall anything like this happening, ever.

Yeah, but itâs also (as far as I have read) the pinnacle example of what you can do with a transparent aquarium to date, so usual rules donât apply. Like the old Calvin and Hobbes cartoon, you just keep driving heavier trucks over it until it fails, then you build it again. Not a great moment in materials science, specifically from the science angle.

They should have used transparent aluminum. Or did they? I believe that it actually exists now.
Houngan

Heh, it did then too, but I donât think itâs actually transparent. Or maybe it is, but I donât think for uses at inches of thickness and millions of pounds of pressure.

Seems like a nice big diamond would do the trick.

According to the wiki page for the AquaDom (AquaDom - Wikipedia) other plexiglass-type large aquariums have failed before: " Failures of large acrylic aquariums have happened at several places before including the T-Rex CafĂ© at Disney Springs in Orlando and the worldâs largest aquarium at the Dubai Mall."
