I mean, if the employees were wearing stuff with the American flag on it, nobody would say a thing about their inappropriate political expression. So this is pretty obviously a case of objecting, not to any political expression, but to a particular example of political expression. So, fuck Whole Foods. If they want to cater to the extremism of the right, everyone else should find a better place to shop for crudite.

Maybe it should be a question? The US us very much an outlier in the developed world on this.

(This is one of the things I find frustrating about many of the free speech/cancel culture discussions - there’s a tendency on QT3 to privilege the US conception of freedom of speech over others, without really thinking about it overmuch).

Yes, it should be. I said as much too :). Or at least implied it. I do not like the status quo, but it is what it is legally.

Sadly, my peer support counselor herself seems to be experiencing some sort of crisis, as this morning she failed to call me for the first time and her office confirmed that something personal is going on, when I called and asked. Makes me a little sad and worried, but also motivated me to do a few unplanned self care tasks, as that’s probably what she’d want me to be doing.

Fuck me did someone actually write this piece?

So that’s not satire? Not The Onion? Who the fuck thinks this is really a good idea?

Edit: Oh okay. The New York Times pitchbot. Got it. Satire.

You okay Scott? :)

The pitchbot retweeting what looks like an actual column header.

It’s paywalled, but real.

Okay the WaPo. Still…

I like this reaction to it.

Perhaps a good wtf? :)

The WaPo management, presumably.

Doing some hash or having premarital sex is just the same as covering up child abuse.

There was an old joke when I was a kid, something along the lines of “Why do southern Baptists forbid having sex while standing up? Because it might lead to dancing!” So, the out of whack act/consequences thing seems endemic to overly Bible thumping types.

American cultural puritanism has always been very performative. Don’t have to be virtuous as long as you keep up appearances with the virtuous Joneses down the street, so to speak.

Not just Americans I think. Look at the “supermen” of the NSDAP, like Goebbels and Goering and what not…“Aryan supermen,” right?

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that he has a conflict of interest

Hey, you take that back! Catholics don’t thump Bibles! We can barely FIND our bibles!

Well, the missals are sure big enough, how can you lose those?
