I lived in Santa Cruz in the early '90s and there were shit-tons of homeless people. Mostly Vietnam veterans. Thanks, Reagan!

A lot of supposedly reliable Democrats coming with the I know X bad thing caused by Dems isn’t really true but it just feels like X is true vibe.

Vote for Democrats at your own risk!

Oh the fucking lying fuckers. I have a great deal of trouble believing that the markets are in any way worried about a democratic congress.
Oh look, the first quote is from a senior member of a firm whose founder is an executive advisor to the Cato institute and is one of the largest political donors in the US. All his donations go to the GOP.
I mean, Democrats are going to probably lose the House because their majority isn’t that big, and the party in the White House always loses seats in the midterm, and inflation is bad, and the GOP have gerrymandered a bunch of seats out of competition. It has basically nothing to do with how actual Democrats in power have performed in this Congress.
Well, I voted. So, that’s that.

There was a very grumpy poll watcher set up at our polling station aggresively eyeing everyone walking in. I recognized 90% of the same staff that we have every election, but he was a newbie!

You’d be grumpy too if you signed up as a volunteer poll watcher sure you’d catch all kinds of nefarious voter fraud and then found out that it’s a boring assignment and you’re not actually seeing rampant cheating. Just lots of people doing their civic duty. Actually, now that I type this. Maybe this experience will do some work to de-radicalize some of the most ardent voter fraud believers just by giving them a very very boring dose of reality?

My prediction: GOP gains 20 seats in House and has 51 senate seats when it’s all over. Starting to think I’m low on senate side though.

Alright I received my official confirmation from BallotTrax that my ballot was received, accepted and counted. I was just worrying.
It’s a worrisome time!

Meanwhile, Republicans are actually trying to steal elections, though voter suppression. If Fetterman loses, it’ll be partly because of stuff like this. Thousands of completely legal ballots thrown out because the voters didn’t write the date on the outside envelope.
(yeah, yeah, twitter link, sorry. It links to a WaPo article which I think is a gift link).

So the experts I trust (dave wasserman/Cook) Jon Ralston in NV are telling same story of huge GOP turnout and Dems no shows. Maybe unexpected Dem mail surge but…
It was a nice couple hundred plus year run we had there, I guess.
This thread is going to cross streams with the “I’m drunk” thread sometime around 10PM EST.
Or sooner. We have a one year anniversary party (a few weeks late, but whatever) at our bar today. I fully plan to avoid doomscrolling via keeping my hands full of beverages.
Me, I’m putting up hurricane shutters, which seems a completely appropriate thing to be doing under the circumstances.

I for one am subscribing to the New York Times for a couple years. Already there are dozens of heartland diner pieces being written and I just cannot get enough of those articles.
I just want to thank @tomchick for cleaning this thread. This is a pretty important day for news in this thread, for it to be clogged with arguments about how to solve homelessness.
