I can’t enjoy the moment. We lost big in NC. If not now, within 2 years.

Odds are NC becomes just like FL now. I have to rush to prepare to get out for my own safety within 3 years.

You’re welcome up here in the Philly area. Come on up!

Southern NJ is an area I am looking at since I know folks there, but I’m trying to hold out to keep my job somewhere else, I got 3 years, though one is going to be spent on surgery recovery.

So are any of the red state legislatures in position to challenge or overturn any of the close senate races?

Southern NJ is basically just a suburb of Philly. Depends where you’re looking at, but it’s pretty good.

Your observation reminds me of a novel by Stephen Fry (yes, the actor/comedian) called Making History about a dude who goes back in time to give Hitler’s mom contraceptives so she never conceives him. He comes back to a world where not only was there a WW2 with Nazis and a Holocaust but Germany got the Bomb before the US, and thus wins. Why? Because a much more tactical vicious anti-Semite rose to power and bided his time, not starting the Holocaust till after German Jewish physicists had done their work.

Not to my understanding. The independent state legislature doctrine primarily applies to Presidential electors. Also, the elections for the Senate are controlled by the Constitution - there was an Amendment from a hundred years ago or so that updated the process - that controls. It used to be the case that the legislatures chose the Senators but we changed that.

Edit: I should mention there is a second aspect of the independent state legislature doctrine that (allegedly) applies to the House of Representatives (different from the Presidential Elector argument) so in theory that could be in play for the House but that would be a very very very very aggressive move by the GOP legislatures and I think the odds of that happening with the Supreme Court case pending is very small. It would look like a blatant power grab and might invoke the GOP “don’t make us look bad” rule and cause the Supremes to crap on the legislatures. (note - “might”)

That’s a relief, thanks.

A crappy, smellier suburb.

The thing about DeSantis is that while he’s scarier than Trump in a vacuum, if he challenges Trump, win or lose Trump will spend the rest of his days trying to burn him down, and (I think) a pretty sizeable chunk of his followers will go along with it. There’s no way of bringing those groups back together if they fracture.

Trump is a religion. Trump’s crazy ass followers won’t just just go to DeSantis if there is a fight. They will be like the far left that wouldn’t go with Hillary in 2016.

DeSantis may still win, history shows that, but it wouldn’t be with all Trumps voters in tow.

An amendment you say? So not the Original Constitution. Hm.

Given the way the Reconstruction amendments are treated by the reactionary majority, I wish I was joking.

Well, Trump does claim he has dirt on DeSantis he can release.

Of course I realize the phrase “Trump claims” is semantically null…

Gentlefolk, please take your Trump v. DeSantis speculation to the Trump 2024 thread.

Thank you.

Please note I’ve been polite. I’m gonna start reporting some suckers pretty soon now. You know who you are.

Sad to check the news this morning and see that Ted Budd (R) won the senate race in North Carolina. It was expected though. For the last two months every ad on TV has been about Cheri Beasley being the literal antichrist who would bring doom to everything, so I can see where that method of campaigning probably got the churchgoers out to vote.

I also saw a statistic that the average age of the vote here was 58. That’s … yeah. If the Dems can’t bring a candidate that appeals to younger voters in 2024, we’re screwed. Hell if we can’t motivate a younger vote at all we’re probably screwed.

I mean, the beaches are right there. Good times.

Well ya, we all went down the shore for vacation.

But still… Jersey.

I spent a lot of time down that way this summer. It’s alright. They have damn good food, especially in late summer when those tomatoes are everywhere.

Please move all of your New Jersey talk to the Locations You Should Never Ever Visit, Even Though They Are Technically Places thread. There are thread cops about.

Sounds like places finally projecting Georgia going to a runoff. Not that it’s a surprise.

Do the locations need to be interesting?
