Say hi to your mother for me.

I’ll put in a vote for Elasti-girl, Dash, and Violet rescuing their bone-headed father, who’d gotten himself in too deep with Syndrome’s evil plans. The kids’ discovery of their own capabilities, Elasti-girl knocking the dust off her confident heroics, and particularly Holly Hunter’s voice work all conspire to give me a real charge during this fulfilling and exciting rescue.

OUATITW: Cheyenne springs Harmonica from the train.

The Professional Leon extracts Mathilda from the DEA building.

The Matrix: Neo and Trinity rescue the fuck out of Morpheus.

True Lies Harry Tasker saves his daughter from terrorists.

Taxi Driver. Technically a rescue.

Obvious choices klaxon:

Bourne Ultimatum. Although I think it’s the weakest of the “original trilogy”, the window-crash and subsequent down-and-dirty tussle in the apartment to rescue Nicky from the assassin Desh always, always, forever, without fail gets my heart pumping. It’s one of those multi-part chases I’ve watched a dozen times but still manages to work me up.

Blade Runner. Similar to with Bourne 3, Roy saving Deckard from the final fall from the roof of the Bradbury building is one of those culminating scenes from an extended chase where the built-up tension, performances and music queues just seem to come together beautifully to totally give me the movie butterflies.

All Star Wars, of course.

  1. Luke rescuing a very relaxed Leia from her detention cell on the Death Star.

  2. Leia & the gang’s very complex effort to retrieve object d’art Solo that sort of fails but has nested contingencies and gold bikinis.

  3. Anakin extricating Jar Jar’s hand from a pod racer turbine after the loveable Gungan attempted to retrieve a hydrospanner. What tension!

Has no one mentioned Toy Story 3 yet? Woody and the gang, terrified and clutching each other for support, are helpless to stop their descent into the fire pit. At the last second they are rescued by those cute aliens and “THE CLAAAAAW.” I truly thought that maybe, just maybe, they weren’t going to make it.

I was going to say Vesper in the Casino Royale remake with Daniel Craig, but Bond can’t get the door open in time. I love this still of Eva Green waiting to be rescued.

Hey, Mr. Incredible would’ve been fine if Edna hadn’t stupidly embedded a blinking, beeping, electromagnetically insecure homing beacon in his new costume.

OMG the first rescue I thought of was the rescue of Sam in I Am Legend, and then I FORGOT. I’m glad you didn’t forget, Christien! That’s one of the best SCENES, let alone rescues, in any movie, in my opinion.

I love the way you described that scene, C.

Superman: Spins the entire freaking Earth back in time to rescue Lois from getting crushed or asphyxiated or whatever.

In World War Z, when Brad Pitt rescues the young Israeli soldier from a bite wound on her hand by quickly lopping it off. If you watch the version on Netflix right now, it’s a blood squirting gory affair and much better than watching another human twitch and spaz into living dead.
