Cap streaming at 480p on PC with no recourse. Netflix is the only service (other than Youtube) that will do 4K on PC that I’m aware of (and that very locked down) but the others pretty much all will at least do 720p. I’d chalk that up to Hulu just sucking, but apparently they have resolutions up to 4K (for some content) on TVs.
Heh, I’ve never noticed. Looks fine to me on my 1080p monitor.
I noticed that Hulu looked worse than all the other services but as I say, I chalked that up to it being a shit service until I was looking into why I wasn’t getting 4K on HBO Max on Wonder Woman 84 and discovered that HBO Max wasn’t doing 4K on PC and in the process also discovered that Hulu actually had 4K support, just…not on PC. And was capped at 480p on PC.
It annoys me because the reasoning for all these services is that they’re worried people will screen-capture it on PC and pirate it that way. Well, cool, except that stuff is pirated anyway straight away, in 4K resolution if people care enough but certainly 1080p, and so I, as an actual legitimate customer, need to pirate it to watch the content at my native resolution.
That’s genuinely surprising to me, because it honestly doesn’t look any different to my eye than any other service on a 1080p monitor. More recent shows look crisp, older shows look a little fuzzy, same as every other service.
Are you sure it isn’t 720p?
I know that the resolution should be higher if you are using Microsoft Edge or the App, at least on PC, but I haven’t looked at it myself recently.
They cap at 480p unless you are compliant with specific DRM provisions, in which case they cap at 720p. I think maybe that means using Edge or the app, but I’m not interested in doing that.
Also it seems like that might be buggy and forcing low quality even on compliant setups, based on some digging. So, yeah. They suck and I’m not rewarding them with my money.
Not sure if this is exactly news or not, but apparently Apple is working on an adaptation of Hugh Howey’s ‘Wool’, and it will star Rebecca Ferguson. Cue that Kelly Wand growl sound.

Interesting. When I read the books it seemed like the main character was very young, like a kid.

Damn, I was excited until I saw Apple.

Nice. That’ll make a good show - loved the books.
I’m in the middle of the second book right now. (Shift). A TV show does sound like a better fit for Wool/Silo than the Riddley Scott movie mentioned in that article that didn’t happen.
I read Wool so I know the ending. It’s the type of ending that washes back over the whole story, sort of like the reveal in Sixth Sense. I’m not sure I can watch the show knowing the story in advance.
I read it too, a couple years ago, and completely forgot everything. I’m sure it’ll come back when I start watching. It was aight. Nothing special to justify its popularity.
I hadn’t heard of AMC Plus. It seems like a decent collection of stuff. TV shows from AMC, of course, plus some shows from BBC America, but also movies from Shudder, IFC and Sundance Now.
Shudder being part of that package makes more sense than when it was part of VRV, I suppose. Seems like a better fit.
So, this is going to sound like a really weird question, but here it is: Is there anything worth watching on cable TV right now? I’ll be getting Youtube TV for a month so I can watch Euro 2020 during the next month. I’m wondering if there’s something else worth watching during that month. I have no clue what’s on non-streaming services anymore.
Oooooooh! That’s right! Inside the NBA! And NBA on TNT in general. I haven’t seen that show in forever. I loved it.
