Ted Lasso was great, but screw Apple’s streaming service. I can’t use the Apple app for video on my Macbook Pro and have multiple monitors set up. WTF, what bullshit.
If I unplug the dock (and turn off the extra monitors), I can use the app. If I leave it plugged in, I get audio but no video. This is apparently by design. I went to Apple support and the first thing they suggest you do is unplug any additional hardware. How sad.
My Fire TV Cube stuttered a bit near the beginning but it went away after five minutes or so. It seems that WW84 is only available in 4K. I’d prefer watching it 1080p to save the bandwidth, but I didn’t see the option to watch it in that resolution.

Netflix has over 200 million subscribers. And this is as Disney+ and HBO Max launch.
Insane.
I’m honestly shocked it’s that few, tbh. Though I guess since households subscribe, not individuals, the actual number of viewers is closer to the number I had in my head (500m+).
A few billion dollars in revenue a month is pretty good I guess, if you like that sort of thing.
Time for my quarterly instigating text to my friend who will explain to me how Netflix is about to go bust because they don’t stream Marvel movies.

And at this point, Netflix seem to be able to raise rates by small amounts arbitrarily without significant pushback. Even a dollar more per subscription goes a long way when you have that many subscribers. They’re not going anywhere.
My wife would throttle me if I tried to cancel Netflix.
I’m still abstractly fascinated by Netflix’s success. I finished up my usual one-month-per-year at the end of December and cancelled as usual. There’s just not much on the service that’s of interest to me, though in fairness (with the exception of Prime, which I keep for more pragmatic reasons) I don’t maintain any streaming service year-round.
When next I need something to watch, I figure I’ll give HBOMax a go. I’m waiting for Disney+'s Marvel stable to fill up a bit more before trying it.
For me the streaming services are all about original content. I like The Office but I’m not subbing to a service because that’s one of their star shows.
How fast do you cancel streaming services? Hollywood dilemma - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
My personal rundown:
Netflix: Have kept this going since the DVD days
Hulu: Kept this going since 2016
Amazon Prime: Kept this going since, uh, whenever Prime launched
Disney+: Took advantage of the pre-launch D23 promo so I paid $140 for 3 years, so my account to paid up until November 2022
Crunchyroll: Recently started, and I’ll keep it going
Funimation: Recently started and I’ll keep it going
HBO Max: I get this as part of my Xfinity plan already
Starz: I sporadically sign up and they just tried to entice me with “six months for $25” but I don’t think there is enough right now for me even with that offer
CBS All Access: Just cancelled now that Discover ended
AppleTV+: They extended my free trial a bit and that ends next month. I’ll probably only resub for specific things like whenever Ted Lasso season 2 is done.
So I guess my habits are: I generally keep things going and I only took the time to actively drop CBS, Starz and, coming soon, AppleTV+.
I read last week that they were extending it again to June 2021. I think.
Edit: Here we go, extended through July 2021
Amazon Prime since the beginning of Prime
Netflix since the DVD days
Apple TV+ just this past week, cause I got a new iPhone and it’s free for a year.
I always consider it a waste to have more than one service at a time. If I’m watching multiple things, why not change the order in which I watch them? So I only keep one service, sometimes two. But I have to admit, I kept CBS All Access for almost a year this time and I already miss it.
Exceptions right now are Disney+ and Apple TV+ being years long things.
Netflix since the DVD days.
Amazon Prime since God knows how long.
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ since Verizon included it in my cell phone plan a few months ago.
HBO Max since Christmas. I bought the 6 month plan and will likely let it lapse after the initial subscription.
Edit: I don’t have cable at home, just an internet connection.
I’m not a streaming hopper. Either a service has enough content to keep me subscribed permanently, or it doesn’t.
Lovefilm (originally a DVD rental service, then a rather bad streaming service, then bought by Amazon and turned into Prime): Active since as far back as my Gmail account goes, so 10+ years.
Netflix: Active since it launched in the UK, or soon after anyway. So maybe 2012.
NowTV: Active since 2014. Probably going to ditch it once I finish Babylon Berlin though. HBO Max will take away 95% of its appeal to me once it launches in the UK.
Cinema Paradiso: DVD rental service, active since Lovefilm’s DVD rental stopped
AppleTV+: will ditch as soon as the free trial ends, depending on whether For All Mankind S2 releases first
Disney+: will ditch as soon as the free trial ends
I’ve sampled a half dozen channels on Amazon, but never for more than the trial period and maybe a further month. No intention to go back to any of them.
Netflix: Usually about one month out of any given year. I’m not interested in the vast majority of their original content so I’m just keeping up with a few specific shows and maybe trying one or two more.
Hulu: About 6 months out of every 12, mostly for background reruns of shows I like and the occasional original.
Amazon Prime: Perpetual since the beginning or Prime, but because of the shipping, not the streaming. That said, I do watch a fair bit of stuff on it.
Disney+: Never had it, not in any particular hurry to get it. Maybe when some more of the Marvel stuff drops, if it turns out to be any good.
HBO Max: Never had it, but thinking about getting it the next time I need some new stuff to watch.
CBS All Access: I’ve never paid for it. I do get the occasional free month to watch a Star Trek show.
I skipped the ones I have no awareness of or will simply never use.
Funny enough, I remember hearing this and checking last week and at the time, my free trial expires on Feb. 21.
But now I’m checking again and they extended me sometime between last week and today, LOL

I would totally hop between streaming services a month at a time, but with multiple family members all using it, it’s just not feasible.
Netflix: Permanent
Prime: Permanent (though mostly due to the shipping)
Disney+: Did the discounted 3-year thing. Gets a lot of use from the kids, so it will probably wind up being extended.
Apple+: Have the long trial from buying a device, but haven’t made any significant use of it yet. Will cancel as soon as the trial is done.
HBO Max: Just did a month, but are not renewing.
Hulu: Used to be permanent but has dropped off lately, and we’ve done on and off.
