LOL I didn’t even recognize that that was his junk!
That’s 'cause PA has conditioned you to believe there is nothing there, just a flat, empty area. It’s insidious when you stop to think about it.

Gabe thinks he’s hot shit. His drawing is a slander on the model. Hence the ridicule to establish some normalcy in the universe.
This…you…how…the…w-WHAT??
NO!
NO!
BAD!

Oh, there’s nothing wrong with the artwork. It’s a stylised cartoon character, not a true-life portrait and let’s be honest: Gabe’s character is carrying less weight than the model in the reference photograph so I’m not that bothered that the former’s thigh’s aren’t touching. Do a GIS for ‘naked model standing’ and you’ll see plenty of NSFW pics of slim women who’s thighs wouldn’t necessarily meet in that pose. You’ll also note that from a distance their boxes look, well, boxy.
No, there’s plenty wrong, for starters the left leg is slopping off the bone.
“The gap”, as it’s called, is a well known phenomenon but try to picture what that woman’s skeleton looks like. Her legs are a nightmare
And the distortions and weird anatomical choices seem to serve no real purpose. They don’t add to the sense of movement or weight, they just make it look weird and sort of gross in places. From the ribcage down it’s practically inexplicable.

I’m sure the cartoon lady’s cartoon skeleton would suit her cartoon body quite nicely. Stuff like ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ must drive you lot mental.
But Spongebob isn’t being used as a pose reference is he? No one is paying those artists to be a teaching tool

David’s hands and head are out of proportion because it was meant to go on a rooftop, where the exaggeration would help a viewer pick out the details from far below. Please explain how Gabe’s depiction of the woman’s legs will help someone who is trying to draw that pose.
I wonder why sometimes the new PA strip is posted at art.penny-arcade.com and sometimes it’s posted at pennyarcade.smugmug.com. My shitty work filter will block a strip posted at smugmug so I can’t see it, but they’re fine with the ones actually posted at PA’s site. I really can’t figure out why they’d change it up occasionally.
That whoosh you heard was over your own head, FYI.

Possibly, although my assumption was that Gabe’s art is to demonstrate the use of the reference picture and was not itself intended to be used as a reference. I’ve no real way of knowing since Salwon didn’t link to the poser helper app.
EDIT: and when I say “I’ve no real way of knowing”, I mean “I can’t be arsed googling” since I don’t have a problem with Gabe’s art in the first place.
It’s a fucked pose. The pelvis has no rotation and throws off everything.

From his post:
Stephen is working on an incredible new App for artists called Posebook. This is a huge collection of photographs featuring models in various costumes striking hundreds of different poses. The other part of the App is that Stephen has reached out to a number of different artists and asked them to choose a pose and draw their take on it. He’ll then include these pieces for some extra inspiration.
(The Stephen in question isn’t me, but someone else named Stephen).
He goes on to say:
I have a very hard time drawing women and so I picked this barbarian woman to give myself a real challenge.
So he admits that it was a challenge for him, but still - the anatomy is completely fucked. I can’t imagine how that drawing will help anyone trying to draw that model.
I like Gabe’s art in general, especially in the context of a three panel comic strip. But seriously, he needs to start paying attention to how human bones move.

For the love of God, people, don’t look at Scott Kurtz’s noses.

So I was right: Gabe’s art isn’t for reference, it’s for technique demonstration.

Still unclear on exactly what technique is being demonstrated there.

Forget Gabe’s art. Let’s talk about how the writing on Penny Arcade used to be better:
