Again, i did not see the news post (and still didn’t read it) and got the comic. At least i think i got it, i thought they were imagining how the heck all the advanced from the future technology works in a seemingly magic way to the observer. The critic to the lag got lost, if that was their intention.
But i knew what it is Onlive and Dpad, unlike AndrewM. :P
Onlive is currently primarily a PC service, so I’m not sure that’s much of an excuse.
Anyway, while I’m usually a pretty rabid defender of the PA guys, I didn’t much care for this one. They’ve done this joke before and better, I thought the elf king in the first panel looked pretty wierd, though I loved the riding mouse, and like Pogo the reuse of the word ‘forgotten’ really leapt out at me.
According to the news post, that’s the whole point of the comic. So this comic did not communicate to you what it was supposed to communicate.
I had no idea that OnLive existed before this. As a guy who plays console games more often than I want, I know what a d-pad is… but “what happens when you press d-pad up” is a particularly poor choice, since 95% of the time games don’t link time-critical controls to the d-pad. The news post talks about the lag between hitting “jump” and the actual jump, so they really should have said either “A button” (common assignment) or “Jump button” (for real clarity). And the comic should have mentioned the final transmission of the jump command somewhere in the last panel. As it stands, they seem to be saying the command never gets executed, which is half the reason the comic doesn’t connect.
man, is this gonna be the nitpick every PA strip right after it comes out thread? Because I’d like to know so I stop checking it.
Yeah it is bro you better skeedaddle
Look at the thread title. “A Penny Arcade strip you like and why.” That opened the door to analysis. It’s inevitable that we’re going to analyze the strips that don’t work as well, and if you’re the type to broadly accept the bad strips, you’re going to see that as nitpicking.
Yesterday’s strip (11/21/2010) is definitely one of their weaker strips. Even though I like the riding mouse and the tik-tock, it’s still very bad at telling the joke.
It’s not a great joke, but I like all the character art.
FTFY. And you went too far this time, spanky. You really expect anyone to believe that you’ve never heard of a game using up on the d-pad for jump? Take your trolling bullshit elsewhere.
Asshole. I’d congratulate you on such a blatant, bullshit troll while decrying trolling, but I fucking hate trolls. So, no.

I’m amazed that a regular QT3 reader doesn’t know what OnLive is.

Ah, I see. After Googling it, I see that I just didn’t know the name. I stopped paying attention to it after the initial announcement, as it sounded like an awful idea.
On the topic on Penny Arcade, I adore the old strips, but Gabe’s shift in art over the last couple years isn’t one I like at all. The limbs have gotten downright goofy.
The Paint The Line series was good, though, and had excellent coloring and I think their best use of motion. His backgrounds and settings are still very good; I just don’t think his people are good at all. You can also see when they’ve dashed off a strip to get something in, and when they’ve put a lot of work into one.

I love the genius vegetable’s mouth.
I honestly had no idea myself that they’d done any such thing - I managed to miss the announcement you mention. However, this isn’t terribly important. You can figure out that they mean some sort of game or gaming service from the dialog.

You’re a nasty little man. Ignore list time, I think.

Yeah, I sort of agree. Some elements of the faces in particular have gotten a bit too abstract for me, but I still think he’s a really good artist.
I just think he’s driven to keep evolving his style, and he’s pretty chilled about whether any particular strip is a hit or a miss.
DickJustADick trolls me, and I’m the nasty little man? Weird.

This thread is ‘A Penny Arcade Strip you like and why’.
It’s where you post a Penny Arcade strip that you like and then say something about it that you like!
So, let’s see:
Gabe’s freeze/eye move in the third panel.
