I await your interpretation of proper context. Understand that a lot of people have already come to their own interpretation.
Free country! Rock Flag and Eagle!

The real design is more odious in context as a response to criticism about their comic.
Unless you just think “Dickwolves” is funny in and of itself. Which it is, kinda.

I never once said PA should stop making jokes using the word rape. I’m sure their intended targets in their head are prudes or oversensitive people (perhaps justifiably oversensitive as one rape victim that took issue with it basically said). But when you look at what the shirt actually represents, it’s a sports like logo for dickwolves… saying, “hey I’m a fan of dickwolves.”
Or just think the term “dickwolf” is funny.

It’s ironic and mocking identification with and essentially rooting for “Team Rape” as a means of trolling,
They made to shirt to show solidarity with “Team Rape”? They must be terrible people. You should stop reading their strip.

where PA really went too far and it’s the basic defensive non-apology that shows they don’t get why.
Apologize for what? To whom do they owe an apology?

Bottom line - they haven’t done anything wrong.

It is my opinion that those folks telling rape survivors to feel bad because of a comic strip joke are the ones doing wrong. But that’s just my opinion - feel free to ignore it.

I don’t think PA are evil people that advocate rape, but in an effort to be ironic, edgy, and huge trolls, the Team Dickwolves shirt went too far.

Unless you just think the term “dickwolves” is funny. I happen to think it is less offensive and funnier than a “Fruit Fucker” but outside of JMJ who cares about that?

Who decides what is “too far?” I’m glad it is not those folks most predisposed to setting that bar somewhere south of the lowest common denominator.

Sigh.

Indeed.

Fuck you.

If you don’t believe words and fictions matter – it’s just make believe on the internet, no biggie – and if you can’t get into the headspace of a rape victim, it makes sense why this doesn’t seem like a big deal.

So would your brain just liquefy and pour out your ear were you to encounter a rape survivor who found the comic funny? Because that’s what it sounds like.

If a rape victim says “this is over the line,” I’m going to believe that person

What if one says “this is over the line” and another says “this is hilarious”?

– it’s hubris to think you know better.

Indeed.

Them, and the small select group whose members include everyone who wasn’t listed on the tumblr of hysteria.

I simply can not comprehend which alternative dimension you people digest Penny Arcade in. This is nothing but an example of a large readerbase catching up with a webcomic that has always been awkwardly gauche, an aggregate of the collective consciousness of “immature manchildren” for years on end. Their replies to this manufactured furore are completely in tune with their published work.

Wing, I like yore fancy-talk. Please put this picture in all your posts.

Please don’t post other users personal information without their consent, Jerri.

Dude, that’s my favorite picture of you. Everyone else loves it too.

God damn it, can we ban erikg yet? He goes around screwing up threads like it’s his day job or something.

Sure they are.

Jackalope: Don’t have much to say to you, since you’re subscribing to the “it’s just pretend,” and that dead ends any discussion right away. I did read your post, and these two things stuck out to me:

Ms. Stanton is allowed to react however she wants to the strip, she, and other folks, need to understand her experience does not make her reaction more valid than anyone else’s.

You argument seems to be that the offended readers do not have a legitimate reaction, but here you say that no reaction is more valid than any other… can you clarify this?

folks went out of their way to be offended?
This is not a manufactured controversy. The people the comic offended had their feelings hurt. The blog posts from Stanton use language like “feelings I can’t choose.” I am certain that those sensitive to rape culture would love to be able to shut off their vulnerability towards it. That’s not an option.

Wow. If only you could muster that level of indignation for someone who wasn’t yourself.

So would your brain just liquefy and pour out your ear were you to encounter a rape survivor who found the comic funny? Because that’s what it sounds like.
I would be astounded, yes, but I would love to hear the rationale of this hypothetical rape survivor. If you can find it, please share it: but honestly, I think you’ll have better luck capturing a live dickwolf. What percentage of rape survivors do you think would find this comic funny?

I assumed Jackalope was echoing Tycho’s line in the response about

those who felt that we were somehow advocating the actual rape of human beings.
. That’s the line of thought which is refuted at the top of the page:

  1. Misrepresenting critics’ primary objection as the assertion that rape jokes “create” rapists and/or “cause” rape.

(That idea is absurd—which is why it’s so appealing to defenders of rape jokes to deliberately misrepresent critics’ arguments in such a fashion.)

If Jackalope was using advocate differently, then perhaps some people are. I can’t speak for them. I am not.

You have to pardon him. He’s a deranged and likely dangerous lunatic.

Or at least that’s my interpretation of his posts.

And as was explained earlier, my interpretation of his posts is just as valid, if not moreso, than his own interpretation of his posts. In fact, I’d urge everyone to share this interpretation, so its validity is increased!

erikg,

I have a couple of professors in Grenada that wants to prove you wrong. Now, imagine for a moment that I’m a coolass dude with more than fifty posts and embedded this link in “that wants to prove you wrong”.

Remove asterisk and have a laugh if you don’t really trust unreplicated research. Otherwise be horrified. If anyone can dig up more than the abstract I’d love to read it.

This whole conversation keeps making me think of this:

It’s like he’s posting from bizarro world.

link via google scholar.

You mean, like the one linked not two pages back (at my thread pagination settings, anyway), not terribly long after this whole thing came back up again?
I.e., this one?

Thanks for that. Man, that guy can sell a joke :)
