Very interesting. I’m having a difficult time understanding how she could feel that way, but there it is. I’m glad I got something to take away from this.

Please.

Just don’t read the comments…unless you want to see the word “mansplaining” used repeatedly and without irony.

How about now? Can we ban erik now? Please?

At least other professional trolls, like Timex, largely confine it to the P&R threads.

One cannot femsplain without using mansplain.

erikg88,

You demonstrated in your post exactly what I said you did: You’ve removed a single word from the context of the work, highlighted it, and then applied a completely different context.

The fact that you thought I was claiming it was some kind of “awareness PSA” only shows to me that I’m paying the price for not dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s in my dissertation above, but I don’t have the time for a do-over and no one wants to hear it.

Instead, this:

“Like we talked about?”

Between attempt two and five

Yeah, I think he got that. He was citing what he liked about the strip, as per convention (before that whole derail).

Let us know when you’re done treating rape survivors like children and are willing to give them agency to make their own decisions that might disagree with your patriarchal view of how they should behave. I know that that’s an almost impossible thing to do for most people who have decided that they want to control women by pretending that they desire equality.

Very interesting. I'm having a difficult time understanding how she could feel that way, but there it is. I'm glad I got something to take away from this.

Ummm, it’s because she doesn’t like you and everyone else informing her that she must feel a certain way because of events that have happened in her past. You do understand that when you tell people what they should think that you’re attempting to assert control over them, right?

i thought that’s what bluejackalope was doing, too :)

For your consideration:

About 5 minutes of rape jokes.

But they’re made by a woman, so it’s okay. Amirite?

About halfway in, my wife said, “Y’know, this is pretty offensive.”

“As offensive as the bill redefining rape?”

“Uh… Oh, no not that offensive.”

OK, now THAT’S some good Jonathan Swift right there! Oh man.

When I think of “rape jokes” that make light of rape (as opposed to those that are satire that depend on the severity of it) this is what I think of.

Oh, Texas…

Before you get on that shitwagon of dumbfuckery, note that this “joke” single-handedly cost the guy the election despite being an overwhelming favorite. And it was over 20 years ago.

It’s not as easy as that, Gabe.

I think that’s a pretty reasonable statement. Isn’t that exactly what people were wishing he would do?

Alright, Rimbo, last comment and I’m finished here.

You said the comic was a “plea for more sensitivity, not less.” That’s where the PSA joke came from.

You didn’t answer of my other questions. (i.e. How does your interpretation explain more of the work than anybody else’s, how do you square it up with Penny Arcade’s response.)

I will just assume those didn’t seem interesting to you, because lord I am excited to stop talking about this.

I thought it was funny how I left my computer and this whole depressing conversation and then saw the Schaal segment on TDS. Like Rimbo said, that was Swift to a t. Really well done.

The whole situation has gone crazy and I won’t bemoan Mike’s call for a truce, but like I said above, at this point it’s too late to just try and ignore it. I’m going to make a guess (and this is based on nothing but the facts and figures stored in my ass) that far more people were making harassing and threatening e-mails, comments and tweets to people on the other side of the debate as were making them to Mike or Jerry. So I guess tragedy really is when you stub your toe, but apathy is when you ignore people harassing rape victims for three days. And frankly, conditional apologies are always bullshit.

That said, Courtney Stanton is no longer selling her Dickwolf Survivor shirt. In her blog entry about the situation she said that she’d been asked months ago to take the shirt down because it was also causing triggers, but she refused because she felt she was making an important political stand. So even while I really don’t respect the way PA handled the situation, it’s nice to see that one of the people most critical of PA demonstrated tremendous hypocrisy in her response.

Yeah, the whole thing ends up coming off as “Whoa, now that threats are being directed at me, THAT’S way too far.”

Then again, the PA guys have always been pretty shitty at apologizing for stuff.
