That is a bit weird. Supposedly the US is more heavily forested now than it was in the 18th-19th centuries, but I’d hardly classify that as “when the Indians were in charge.”
If I remember correctly, we have a higher tree count, but it’s all saplings grown for lumber; the old-growth count is way lower.
