Advance Wars on the Gamecube

I’m busy, but I just had to say that the Advance Wars game on the Gamecube is an unholy abomination. Get in a tank and run around and shoot things in real time! Oh boy!

A great franchise gone bad.

Fuck Advance Wars.

X-Com syndrome strikes again!

Here’s a link to the other thread, where people rant about the desecration of the AW license.

I think a version of Battlezone (the strategy/action one) set in the Advance Wars universe is a nice fit and sounds pretty good. In theory, of course.

Obviously this game will suck. Obviously.

Seriously, has anyone actually played it at E3? Speak up!

Could be. It still seems like an odd marriage, even if that’s what they were going for. Advance Wars was all about the turn-based game mechanic–the setting was utterly generic. It seems like an odd choice for a cross-genre game, because by getting rid of the turn-based gameplay, you get rid of the one thing that made the game interesting. I have little interest in the Advance Wars setting, so it’s not like I’d jump to play a game just because it’s part of the Advance Wars franchise.

But I haven’t seen the game, so who knows? If it’s like Battlezone, that’s a plus.

I guess it’s not the setting or story, but you do (or at least I did) start to become fond of the adorable AW units after 200 hours. Plus, I don’t really see how a turn-based AW would benefit from being on the GC. I suppose the devs could implement cooler battle animations, but that would be irrelevant to the turn-based gameplay. A Battlezone-type deal is a lot more interesting to me than, say, a generic RTS game. Though an Advance Wars adventure-racing game would be good too.

I’ve heard enough people say they were surprised at how good it is to give it a chance.

I’d go more for an RPG with Nell and the Orange Star commanders as party members. The pace of an RPG matches more with the GBA games, I’d say.

I’m really not too keen on the initial impression it makes. Battlezone was a little cumbersome interface-wise, and that was with a keyboard. But I will wait and see.

A larger screen is a big benefit–bigger battlefields, and the ability to see more. More memory for saves, too–they could get a Panzer General-style “improve your army” thing going between battles. Although to be honest, I’d probably buy a straight up port with improved graphics, too.

Where’s my Advance Wars kart racing game?
