Adam, this weekend some buddies and I found out multiple castings of that spell that grants powers to Dedicated to Evil units actually stacks and gives two MORE abilities. :)
Well, you’re supposed to be EVIL.
hahaha jesus, that’s nuts.
Probably go post that one on the official boards. I already feel like it’s borderline OP.

I’m curious, how often do you try and tailor your army to either your enemies or the neutral armies on the map? I tend to just make due with what I have and take on fights I think I can win. I try to keep a balanced army, such as having enough ranged and a pikeman in case there is cavalry or to guard another unit - but it is rare that I build my army to fight a specific opponent.
If I see the enemy amassing a certain type of unit, I will try and counter. For instance, in a recent game the AI clearly got access to some means to summon Bone Dragons, and he’d have one or two in every stack, so I started building up my pikemen so I could recruit them out of the gate with 2 medals, and blinding aura in one city thanks to a nearby adventure map location, and I made sure to put one in each army. I also stopped focusing so heavy on Big Beetles, since they do a lot of damage and effects Bone Dragons are immune to.
It helps to scout and see what you are up against. If you are fighting a Warlock player, you’ll want some heavy hitters to counter his stronger troops, but if you are up against a Theocrat, getting spirit resistance on your heroes is a priority, and units that use spirit abilities becomes a waste of resources, usually.
I’ll tailor my forces to an opponent if they’re strong enough and invested heavily enough in something I feel like I can counter. I never tailor the units I produce to lairs on the map, other than maybe crapping out a few priests to clear out a pesky tomb or something, and that’s awfully rare.
Like, if they’re coming strapped with a jillion Crusaders, I’ll try and crank out what elemental damage I can to punch through their armor. Cavalry/pikes is an obvious, explicit counter. If they’re rolling out stacks of T3/T4s, they tend to be fairly homogeneous armies so you can often find some advantage there.
Generally speaking, though, you win by using what you got better than they other guy does. I prioritize synergies within my own armies moreso than countering the enemy. And hell, if you get a couple of the unit specialty buildings that give a unit class bonuses, those give you so much value for your gold that I tend to dedicate that city to a unit and if I go to war with full stacks of pikemen, who cares when they’re +2 def +2 holy and have Blinding Aura?

The Frostling force that came to besiege my newly taken city was twice my size, but they ran into three newly minted flame tanks, brewed just for the occasion. Many shuuvs and zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the slor that day, I can tell you!

One 6-troop full of mostly physical damage units vs 1 stupid lowly Air Elemental (+phys resist) while Cosmic Event: Omen of the Dove (-3 Phys) is active = 1 super dead troop.

I can’t seem to find a way to disable certain leaders for good.
I only play skirmishes and every fucking time that little douche “Ham Binger” just shits over everything else. I have to go in and manually set up all my enemies to make sure he’s not part of the group and this takes away from the uncertainty and fun for me. Last game he won with over 40000 “points” or whatever against everyone else who had a pretty even spread of around 10-15k. I was dying to monster packs of neutrals filled with dragons and other tier IV units but this douche just waltzed in and grabbed all the seals. 40K+ vs. 10-15K for everyone else including me. Me thinks that asshole must be broken.
The game before he had the second half of the map closed down while I was still fighting this other leader over the first 1/4th of it. The smug little bastard wasn’t even hostile he just refused to ally with me and the game basically ended in a tie. It would have been suicide if I attacked him and it wasn’t a seals game so I had no conceivable way to win… It’s like he’s genetically engineered to piss me right off.
Back to the question; any way to disable leaders other than manually picking each of them for a skirmish?
I don’t believe there is any such thing, no. I suspect it was just a weird RNG confluence, though, and not a halfling warlord being all that OP.

I had quite a bit of luck earlier with a cosmic event called: Rise of the Fire Rogue. The in-game encyclopedia says to expect a level 12 rogue to appear somewhere on the map, and to carry around some magic loot and an army for defense. Well, what I “encountered” (they jumped me) was a level 16 rogue, and the army was comprised of a few tier iv phoenixes, a couple assassins, and a flamer.
Anyway, I entered the fight with fuck-all chances of winning, because I was still pretty early in the game. But, my level 5 Thoecrat Hero had just learned Convert, and the first thing I did was try to Convert the enemy Rogue Leader. I had a 60% chance, and it worked! What luck. Turns out the enemy rogue also had an item that gave her seduce, and I was able to further seduce one of her assassins to my party. I very quickly made short work of what was left of her forces.
The spoils of that event were a new level 16 Rogue hero, (all my other heroes are about level 4-5 at the moment), an assassin, a mount, 3 legendary items (one of which is the seduce item), and a Mythical item that gives a hero fire breath.
More events like that please.
That’s outstanding. 60% convert…jeez, learn to pick up some +res, scripted event rogue!

On top of that, there’s an unexplained +12 fire damage bonus to all melee and range attacks that this unit has. Perhaps it’s because she’s a special unit that only shows up during a Cosmic Happening (I’m pretty sure it is). I haven’t been able to figure out where else this damage bonus is coming from (whether skills or loot), aside from being some special bonus she was given for being a unique unit from this particular event.
I mean, the event IS called “Rise of the Fire Rogue” after all. And fire rogue she is. I’m making a mental note to always bring Theocrat heroes to that one. I’m glad she never had the chance to hit me.

That’s pretty crazy! I don’t have Eternal Lords yet so I have no idea what these cosmic events are capable of.

I am not doing that well at the game and have read some of the suggested materials in this thread. I do not have time to sit through a long series of videos. Is there one or two videos that concentrate on strategy? I am having trouble with my economy and I always do badly attacking a city in manual mode. I have tried watching some of the suggested Let’s Plays in this thread just looking for something more condensed.
The sad thing is I am playing on the King setting.
I’m not sure what you mean by playing on King is sad. First off, if you are new to the game, you should try the default setting - especially while learning the economy, since anything above Knight the AI gets a bump in resources.
Second, a tip - if you see the red PAUSE icon when you are building something in a city, cancel that building and select Merchandise instead. If you can’t afford to start producing a thing, it’s better to produce extra gold so you can build it later, instead of sitting on a paused production queue, which serves no one.
Third, as with any strategy game, you just got to roll up your sleeves and DO IT. Get your hands dirty, fight a lot of manual battles and don’t rely on auto-combat. Get the basics down, like how action points work and how flanking works, things like that. Do you have any specific questions, maybe?
They added a bunch of special properties to particular heroes in EL/1.5, which is awesome. My Theocrat with Vigilance? Yes please!
+12 fire damage may be a bit over the top tho.

Looks like that’s a bug. Mutation from Wild Magic does something similar, but it doesn’t stack.

GeeWiz, battle wise the number 1 problem is to put your units in a position where they get flanked and killed. I know it is a problem and I still do it sometimes! The AI is good at attacking your exposed units from a flanking direction to set up the next attack from the opposite side so that attack flanks too. Then your unit doesn’t get a retribution attack.
For me money gets tight, especially at the beginning. Only build the buildings you need to so you don’t waste resources you could be spending on troops.
