So on the topic of “keep playing”, would anyone be interested in doing a PBEM game? Have been enjoying the ongoing AoW3 game and would like to try with this too.
I’m on record supporting this, despite barely scratching the surface of the campaign. But I’m game!
Something coming tomorrow?
Yeah, this is some potentially great news. I haven’t played in some time, since my co-op game with @ShivaX took a dive, but I’ve been tempted to get back to it every time I read more in this thread that reminds me how much I like this one. I’m mid-Doom (replay), Kingmaker (replay), and Dragon Quest Buidlers 2 so I don’t need another game to play just yet, but I also don’t have any new titles coming until the end of March (and then they all drop on the same damn day, but I digress) so I’m sure to pick this up again soon.
I can’t wait to hear more about the upcoming expansion! I’m sure it’s quite a ways out of course, but still. Late summer, maybe?

I’ll probably give this another chance when the expansion hits. This game hasn’t hit in the feels the way AOW3 did for some reason.
From what I can gather, this is because of 2 reasons typically.
One, its not fantasy. I’m a sucker for fantasy, less so for Sci fi.
Two, City building and diplomacy have been expanded massively here, arguably shifting the focus of the game from very simple city management and intricate battles, to somewhat more involved city management And intricate combat.
If you plot the game series, both the combat and the City management have steadily gotten more and more involved.
Go play AoW1 and you’ll see how you couldn’t even found new cities, or expand their area.
Fast forward to Planetfall and you are pretty much obliged to use settlers.
This last issue is for me the only real gripe I have.
I absolutely loved played with settlers off, medium density cities in Aow3, because every city became so much more important.
I feel that’s been diminished a bit in Planetfall, at the same time ironically the actual city management itself is vastly more involved.

Ah, those were the days!
I ended up liking the new Master of Orion quite a bit precisely because it was more streamlined (hence the accusations by some people of it being “baby’s first 4X”). I’m also (re)playing Warlords III. I feel like over time, there’s arisen this notion among strategy gamers that more is more, but I tend to feel that in general, less is more.
Planetfall is a good game, but I do wonder if it’s not grown a bit too complex…

I don’t mind the settlers per se, but they’re not implemented that well, IMO. It’s just a land rush right at the start and I don’t find city placement very interesting. I still find the map and the city development to be fairly boring.

Ok. Looks like everybody has to be online at the same time to start a game, which is annoying. Guess I’ll just take a shot and see if we can get anything moving.
24 hours from now (11:00 p.m. Pacific time on Feb. 11), I’ll create a game for anyone who wants to join with password ‘qt3’. I’m thinking start off with a team game vs. an equal number of AI players, but am open to another setup if people would prefer.
And it’s a little weird with city building.
In AoW3 you basically had obvious sites where the game wants you to put a city. There are 3 resources nodes around, wink-wink. But you still have some sort of creative decision of putting a city right there. Or you could play with no city founding but with, say, a lot of neutral towns and so you play diplomacy. AoWP has a more complex city development, and each province adds a lot to town uniqueness but it feels much more restricted, on rails. Instead of granular choice of where to put your town - and I’m not saying it was a great mechanic cause if you wanted to play optimally you had to count hexes and remember how much max influence could you get for the town - you make very definitive decisions. You get interesting choices, but you may feel restricted. It’s like in modern XCOM aliens deliberately attack 3 cities at once forcing you to make a clear choice between missions and rewards as opposed to older ones where you never have that clear choice but just feel divided between several tasks from time to time.
Also you’re right about both combat and city management getting more involved. I think it might be exhausting.

And here we go, some info on future update.
I’ve just talked about colonizing and here you go - no colonizing option is coming. A lot of other stuff too, like secret tech getting an immideate starting effect, giving you a special unit and so on.

Since it was just announced this morning that the next update (a big one; see above) goes live in a week, maybe hold off until after that drops?
EDIT: And I’m on the east coast, so maybe choose an earlier evening time?
It’s almost like Triumph listen to feedback…

Sounds great! I think I’ll jump back in on the 20th, after the 48 hour window on the PzC2 beta expires.
Wow, that all sounds fantastic. Can’t wait!
Interested in hearing what you think of that one, I’m hanging back for a sale as the price for what I’ve seen of it was too rich for my blood.
Those are some fantastic changes, many of them I didn’t even know I wanted and now I’m super excited for. A few I DID want that are included, is an option to stop making one faction mad when you do quests for the other - I suppose they wanted to ensure some conflict, but it’s a little frustrating when you want to made friends in the early game.
I’m also really glad to hear there will be a way to reduce initial AI hatred - it’s always bothered me that no matter what class/race I play as, two or even all three other AI players hate me from either being a specific race or having a specific start bonus/penalty - I’m probably just unlucky on the RNG, but it happens no matter what I pick and it’s maddening!
Some amazing new features, I’m really happy about this turn of events!
Is anyone going to check out the stream? Did it already happen?

Yes, the pre-order is pretty expensive, but it includes two DLC’s and I bought lots of DLC for Panzer Corps 1 and enjoyed them. Hopefully I won’t regret it but I know I’m taking a risk
