The first tutorial campaign mission is short, not a full game. The cool thing is, they get you to do a ‘practice game’ next before continuing with the campaign, which is pretty neat. So you will kind of get your wish soon enough!

Hmm…they added that after I started the second scenario of the campaign way back when. Does the ‘practice game’ contain tutorial pop-ups, as well?

Yep improved tutorials is a fairly new thing, I think added to Tyrannosaurus update? From memory it does continue with some tutorial popups.

Turns out I was only a turn away from completing the tutorial. But, yeah, I’m onto the practice map now. I spent way too much time looking at and customizing my commander without really knowing anything about anything. But the tool tips really do a good job of giving you the basic idea.

When I first started the practice map, the AI lady gave me the option of enabling or disabling combat tutorial tips. These might be the popups you’re referring to?

@BloodyBattleBrain or other pros here, for your first or second colony, do you go for one heavy in energy, industry, or research?

Pro?

Haha.

I find my economy can limp along by clearing stuff for a while, so I don’t rush for energy.

It does depend on what the capital city is doing.

I usually like to have the capital as a production centre, then go for a food centre, then energy for everything.

I rarely go for science centres, unless there are some juicy science land marks.

@Lennart_Sas
@TriumphJordi

Triumph… You know what I would love? A game mode where you cannot build the final Tier IV Elite units. For variation I think this would be a lot of fun as it would put even more focus on mods, instead of having the end-game be all about pumping that final tier unit out ad nauseum. Think you can make that happen?

Hmm, that’s how the game already plays for me. The bulk of my army is made up of lower tier modded units, not stacks of T4’s like was usually the case in Age of Wonders 3.

Yeah, you can’t afford a lot of the top tier units. Not only do they cost cosmonite, but they also have a cosmonite upkeep. The bulk of my army are tier 2 units with a fair mixture of tier 3 units.

Is the end game score victory bugged? The reason I am asking, if I look at the victory condition, in my game it says my rank is 2 with a score of 24000. However, if I look at the score graphs, I am at the top and my score is 60000.

There is a patch coming today, FYI. @ShivaX and I were having a great game from last week that we had to stop at a few days ago due to a bug where the AI would be taking it’s turn (simultaneous turns; I’m referring to the neutral/invasion forces move turn) and some of their armies would get “stuck” and freeze, causing the game to never resume the next turn cycle. We were going to call the game foul and start a new one later this week, but I happened to post my experience on the forums and found out they are pushing a patch out today and that is one of the issues that is fixed, so we’ll try to get back to our game tonight and see if it’s working again. I hope so, it was one of the better 4X experiences I’ve had in a really long time, and had been very fun!

This can be modded, and I think quite easily.

Just de link the t4 units from the research tree.

So they’d still exist in the database but you wouldn’t be able to access them.

Quick question - although Triumph Studios make games that should totally appeal to me… AoW3 did absolutely nothing for me. Is Planetfall similar to AoW3, or is it a whole new beast? Thanks.

Planetfall is similar to Age of Wonders 3. If you didn’t like Age of Wonders 3, it’s probably not going to do much for you.

-Tom

Tom is probably correct here, but it really depends on why you bounced off AoW3. If it was due to the fantasy setting, and you’re more a sci-fi guy, than Planetfall might be right up your alley.

On the other hand if you just have poor taste there’s no helping you.

Thank you!

Thank you!

I taste just fine! :-P

The economic model in this game is such a different beast than past entries in the series - does anyone have advice on how best to expand? When to annex vs. when to colonize? Maybe a guide I can read?

Love the series, am enjoying this game, but am having a hard time figuring out what I should be doing from turn to turn!

I disagree with the other opinions. If you didn’t like AoW3 I think you’ll like this one because I’m in the opposite boat. Though I played this a ton, I loved AoW3 and like it way more than this title. This just turned out too X-Comish for my tastes and I didn’t care for how the map dynamics work.

I really hope they do an AoW4 and go back to how maps, territories etc worked in that game and be a little less X-Com focused in battles.

I am the opposite. I love capturing sectors so much more than growing a hexagon outward from a city center. And I don’t think the tactical combat system has changed enough for me to have a preference either way. If anything it just makes the cover system more apparent to the user.

I liked the more organic growth in AoW. It fits the theme :)
