So, that patch that dropped today…unlocks galactic empires mode.

Enjoy!

High morale bypassing the to-hit calculation is huge for a number of army compositions. You also always proc your status effects on a critical shot, IIRC.

@BloodyBattleBrain do you have a link to those patch notes? I’m curious. I specifically noticed the addition of a new district type “residential” which allows you to further increase the size of cities and productivity of workers. It’s a boost to the “playing tall” strategy which I enjoy so I’m curious about the details.

Oh wow, I had assumed that was part of the expansion. Very cool!

I don’t have patch notes, no.

I think the free part of the expansion has unlocked early lol.

Residential districts allow you to get more sectors than you normally would.

And each race has its own version of a residential sector, which has 3 levels.

Each level unlocks different bonuses.

Amazons, for example, get a chance to tame an animal whenever a society research is finished, iirc.

Oathbound are paid for I think, but the galactic empires mode is free.

Also, great fun.

I rolled a planet yesterday, and the modifier was “Penguin Hive - the beaked menace got here first.”

Every penguin hive I get will net me reputation with the Celestians.

And every mopnitoring station I drop with net me reputation with the Synthesis.

Reputation translates into renown points.

Renown points are used to purchase mods, units and operations you would not otherwise have access to.

And the more you play, the more of these you unlock.

This being my first game I don’t have much unlocked, but I selected the Vanguard Owl, so once I get renown, I can “purchase” the Owl with it, and then be able to build the owl in my cities.

I chose the Owl because I am playing Dvar, and Prospectors aren’t great at scouting, but are good at getting free resources.

Owls are good scouts.

I also picked a laser ablation mod, so the plan is to have these guys flying around as a fast scout/light reinforcement force, and in battle they’ll melt enemy armour.

As Dvar I have an armour advantage, so my thinking here is to tilt things in my favour.

I chose the cleaning pulse operation as well, because that gives me a handy “get rid of effects” card.

Can’t wait to hear about your First Impressions when I get back into the ‘office’ tomorrow. I’m really curious to see what you think.

My first impressions:

Oathbound faction looks excellent.

New Galactic Empire mode looks good.

The Oathbound campaign characters seem very “French” or perhaps Monty-Python “Fronch!”. I’ll say this for the Oathbound campaign, at least it’s an aesthetic.

Overall, the impressions are strongly positive albeit with a bit of mockery for the silly ACCENTS!

Your mother was a hamster?

I’ll be playing when I get home, but only for an hour or two. I’ll be able to put hours into it tomorrow. Thanks to the slow drip of a 4x game, it might take a few hours for me to form a solid opinion, but based on all the AoW3 and prior Planetfall expansions I’m positive it will more than deliver… Lack of space halflings notwithstanding.

I’ve been out of the loop so long I’ve forgotten a lot of the basics of Planetfall but at least love the CONCEPT of this new Galactic Empire mode, a cool way to have something akin to a roguelike deck builder’s campaign in the game. GE mode appears to give each random skirmish some context, but without the story nonsense like most of the Planetfall campaigns (the storylines of these campaigns might have been fine, but I found myself quickly skimming through all of the text and often getting lost on who I was now allied with or fighting according to the “plot”).

Have the penguins been in Planetfall from the get go or were they just recently added? It wouldn’t be a true AoW game without them.

Space Bretonia!

In form the beginning, this was made sure of.

I had the chance to play for thirty minutes. I created an empire, started a campaign. selected 3 reserve units (or whatever they were), and landed on the planet. Although I’m super familiar with the game before this expansion, I now have no idea what I’m doing. I’ll have time to remedy that tomorrow. unfortunately that’s all the time I have to play Planetfall today.

I like the new cosmetic customization items/looks.

Man there is a lot of new stuff since last I touched Planetfall.

Trying the APC start based on @BloodyBattleBrain’s evangelism. My goodness is it strong early.

Promethean Amazons. Burninate the countryside! We’ll see how it goes. Absolutely crushing the early battles like you tend to, but I’m trying to hump for the one other HQ on my continent to try and get the bonus for knocking a rival out within 20 turns. This may prove to be a mistake.

What is the short description on what the new galactic empire mode is?

It introduces a Meta-game layer with tighter, more randomized gameplay scenarios rather than setting the traditional sandbox game.

Welp.

The AI thought it had enough to challenge me in the open field, ho ho ho. In multi-stack battles it still does the thing where it just advances into the meat grinder rather than consolidate its forces, so the extra turn and a half of engaging the first half of his army (he was split 5/4) with my full stack was the deciding thing.

Mycelian Fertilizer was a fun unit I got out of a dungeon or something that I hadn’t seen before. Pretty gnarly artillery attack and a solid melee, though it’s more of a supporting T3 artillery than a core that you’d build your army around.

That… is a very beefy Amazon.

I randomized appearance until I was amused, and the name sprung fully-formed from my brow as Athena from Zeus.

I’m up for that, so do you work to conquer multiple worlds? Or does it all take place on the same world you picked at the outset?

I’ve started one to find out, was just wondering from anyone who has been playing it a bit today.

@TriumphJordi Having a great time! Thanks for the team’s hard work on this :)

Bit of a bug – picked up a goodie hut in the ocean with a flying scout, and chose the option to Create unit: Imperial Buggy. I got nothing! No unit, nothing. When I lose this map, it’s on you personally ;)
