i have completely forgotten how to play and what good strategies are. would people please recommend some good guides? I’d prefer written guides but video would be ok.

This is how I feel too. There are a lot of guides out there from release, but I am pretty sure Planetfall has really changed how it handles exploited sectors, colonies, and economy in general. These parts were always confusing before.

DasTactic has started a new series:

I just realized something –

It’s been a really refreshing experience coming back to Planetfall after a while away and not having to look up anything out-of-game. The in-game documentation really is outstanding, and the UI designers deserve a ton of credit for distilling a TON of information down into not just a consistent iconography but also for prioritizing the information you tend to care about and presenting a clear hierarchy.

To use an obvious example, the priority of information for an weapon attack is something like:

damage > damageType > range > AOE > procs

It’s not quite that clear or perfectly hierarchical, obviously, but you get the idea. The Planetfall UI is excellent at presenting that information in an organized fashion, which makes it much easier to parse as a player.

We’ve all played many games where information is presented in a flat manner and it takes that much more effort to find the thing you’re looking for.

I have feelings about this sort of thing, and Triumph is really really good at it.

(I still have my quibbles with the fundamental design around unit mods in Planetfall and that’s why I think I like AOW3 better overall as a result, but there’s a ton to love here too and some clear, clear steps forward from AOW3 that do make it hard to go back.)

@Sharpe has half of it. The costs for a tactical operation are energy and operation capacity. There are separate mutators for each of these, so the “free” in your game could refer to either the energy cost or the operation capacity cost. The tooltip will specify which cost is “free”.

Random quick question - do the Archeology skills stack with multiple heroes? The leadership style skills generally don’t stack in this game, but they also all explicitly state that they do only function on the leader.

The archeology tooltip says “Completing an anomalous site with this hero…” which is distinctly more vague than something like an aura which will say “Only functions when the hero is the army’s commander.”

Edited to add: I feel based on gameplay precedent (where army-wide buffs are restricted to the commander), they shouldn’t stack. But based on tooltip precedent (where the tooltips explicitly state rules exceptions) they should. It has probably provoked more thought from me than it should have.

Couldn’t find the answer beforehand, but it turns out you cannot build residential sectors in aquatic zones. Alas.

I’m kinda curious to see how Galactic Empire plays out. I’ve been playing Fantasy General 2, and enjoying it, but I feel like I could use a break. But I also know that means I may never go back to it if I stop.

I’m guessing the only hero who applies to an archeology attempt is the leader of the stack. Have you checked the Planetfallopedia for more specific info on archaeology sites? Might be in there. But, really, do you have so many hero skills points that you can double up on archaeologists? What kind of baby mode difficulty level are you playing on? :)

What kind of lousy future doesn’t have houseboats? LAME.

The one thing I really miss from AoW3 is independent cities.

Regarding archeology, I think it picks the highest archaeology skill.

I do miss Crusader Kings 3 / Old World / At the Gates tool tip style. I hope that becomes the standard going forward.

Damn it, last night greenmangaming had the premium edition selling for $26. Back up to $90 right now (out of stock).

Thought it was all digital…?

I’m not sure what it included beyond the season pass, but it would’ve been a nice to pick the base game and the dlc.

I love DasTastic so that is a solid rec from Ironsight, but I’ve also found Black Arrow Gaming while looking for AoW3 guides, which also seem quite solid (he has a ton of stuff for AoW3, but some newer Planetfall stuff as well).

There’s an official YouTube tutorial series with four 10-15 minute videos in it. I’ve watched the Operations and Expansions Videos and thought they were pretty decent.

ok so it looks like i will have to fall back to Youtube videos.
one thing i need to learn is how to read the tactical battle maps. they feel cluttered and hard to decipher right now.

Most of the time I don’t find it too bad, but the flying units, especially the multi-figure flying units can be confusing and sometimes easy to miss.

I watched all four of the videos @Dejin linked, and I thought they were worthwhile. (I watch these things while treadmilling, and anything that keeps me on the treadmill longer is a good thing.) I learned a few things I’d forgotten or never learned in the first place – e.g., that there’s a “free” 1-hex move that costs no action points.

The bit about sectors, though, left me a bit confused. I dimly recall that sectors had “small icon” bonuses, visible on the strategic map, that often would not be relevant until you’d researched later tech. I also recall that each sector had a terrain rating and some other rating. I’m not sure I saw any of that stuff in the videos. Has sector management changed since release?

Yes sector management has changed.

It’s been streamlined, made easier to understand.

And the rewards unlock earlier too iirc.
