All Aspect Warfare

You’d think after making the same game 5 times, he’d get something right…

Holy shit, Derek is posting in that thread.

Edit: There’s no way to link to individual comments on RPS. Just crtl-F for “dsmart”.

I see no threat of a lawsuit yet in that thread. It may not be him.

I’d like to nominate that as the worst ground texture EVAR for an unreleased game in the second half of the first decade of the century.

It’s a planet made entirely of chocolate cake. You have a problem with that?

Troy

These games must be really cool in his head.

Maybe he could design games but leave the implementation to someone else?

I like that his first comment starts off : sigh This should entertain me for a few minutes anyway…

How can he keep getting money to make games?

How the heck does the scope/carrying handle work on that weapon?

I never disliked his first premise, the battlecruiser and its operation, however he just didn’t focus on getting that right, instead he expanded into oblivion.

I remember buying Battlecruiser 3000, and thinking, wow this isn’t a ship, its just a big fighter plane, why can’t I operate a proper ship, with gun batteries and whatever, I mean the damn thing had forward mounted guns and spun on the spot.

Starshatter did it better, however it still felt somewhat distanced from a proper battleship sim.

How about combining the Sims + Bc3000ad.

I’d buy that.

I really, really, tried to get into BC3000 and even had a chat with Derek here, of all places, where he kinda tried to help me get the hang of things. But things were broken in some places or totally unintuitive and once those issues became issues the discussion broke down rapidly.

Still, the idea of a populated ship that you controlled was a rush. Managing crew, having physical decks and systems to be concerned about in detail and the big old living universe was all very impressive. But as someone said, “Derek should design 'em and let someone else implement 'em.” More focus on the ships and the crew aspect and less on FPS and other junk would be great.

I’ve always wanted Derek Smart to get it right. He really does have some excellent ideas butlacks the budget to get it right.

I also think he should go back to trying to get the ultimate battle cruiser simulation perfect.

At this point I’m completely convinced that it must be some sort of trust fund/inheritance/extremely rich family situation.

I would bet cash money that he never gets an Xbox 360 released.

Looks like All Aspect Warfare will be released within a few months. Smart answers a lot of questions about the game in the comments to this Rock, Paper, Shotgun post.

dsmart says:

[You’ll have to be nicer than that here, Derek - our readers are largely expressing honest commentary based upon their experience of the game rather than simply taking a pop at you. We want civil and constructive discourse from both sides. Rest assured we have been deleting and will continue to delete the genuinely nasty reader comments, of course. Thanks, RPS]

It’s already comedy gold!

Smart seems to have a pretty abrasive conversation style. In those comments there’s some good, substantial back-and-forth about the game, though. I think what you get out of talking with Smart depends a lot on what you put into it. He’s not nice to cat-callers.

I think it’s sad that every conversation about his games veers abruptly to his persona. Rock, Paper, Shotgun are doing some good work trying to keep the discussion focused on the actual game, which seems to have something new to offer. We’ll see, I guess.

Not that i’m in love with Derek Smart, but making fun of the art or graphics on what is basically an indie game is poor form.

You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me. The graphics are the same as when he was funded by a major publisher. I’m cool with the “indie game scene” adopting Derek though, he’ll fit right in with the kooks that have infested it.

I kind of agree. But anyone who is a fan of seeing his vision become a reality whether by him or someone else, could give a shit about cutting edge graphics.

Think Mount & Blade.
