They do indeed, enough people report you for swearing or whatever and you’ll get a warning/ban.
They could just. . . not moderate them?
If they don’t have chat channels, people can still harass and stalk you via PMs. If they’ve got a reporting and moderation system for that, I’m not sure why the same people couldn’t take reports from a general chat channel. Otherwise. . . people can suck it up?
There’s just no defensible reasoning here that I can fathom, aside from NewBlizz sucks balls.

Open chat would just consist of gold spammer after gold spammer and you would just turn it off anyway. I suppose some would be happier that way, at least there would still be a channel, just not one anyone wanted to use.

They don’t want people using their game like IRC, because they pay the support costs. Remember there’s no persistent world, so you can’t have a “New Tristran Trade” chat channel as there could be hundreds of thousands of people in New Tristram. They’re allowing party chat, direct whispers, and guild chat. If you want to sell something, use the auction house.
I don’t want to sell something, I want to socialize with the hoi poloi of the internet, since they’re all fascinating, awesome people who are always nice and never repetitive or trollish.
Get a (IRC) room.
As a “common man” D2 player, I can tell you that I never used the chat rooms, other than for the occasional trade. If the auction house fulfills that need, I really don’t see what’s wrong with them dropping this “feature”.
What exactly are you dying to chat about in D3 that makes this such an outrage?
What activating the gem does.
LMFAO. Nice one, holy shit I’d forgotten about that!
I really couldn’t care less about open chat. Like already stated the good from them is dwarfed a thousand times over by the bad. I wouldn’t sink a penny into it either.
The Softcore playthrough required for Hardcore does sadden me though.
It seems like everyone and their mother has Beta Keys now :(
Poor DKD hasn’t got one :(
Well no beta keys means we just get to enjoy it that much more when it releases… Right? RIGHT???
/sob
Yes, actually.
I don’t exactly regret having had the chance to play, but playing a beta with the glitches and changes to come isn’t always the best way to get first crack at a game. Especially if you believe the adage about first impressions and all that. All it’s made me want to do is watch carefully to see if the lag, hitches, stalls, or whatnot are ironed out before I actually play the released version.
I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so vindicates before.
I also didn’t realize just how fucking sad my life is!
That was actually really funny. And good news, one less thing to get people upset over, at least.

But will they be moderated?

That was silly. Bashiok didn’t just make a mistake and forget that chat channels were in. Blizzard changed their mind after seeing the backlash. Why would he have to act like he just forgot they were implemented?
shrug That’s probably what happened, but it could also be the case that the decision had been reversed and he simply wasn’t in the loop (unlikely, but possible, failures of communication do happen).
I think it’s a pretty reasonable decision (to remove the global channels), but hey, that’s just me.
I don’t have one, if it makes you feel any better.
I actually don’t intend to play D3 until it’s released. So the fact that I don’t have a beta key doesn’t bother me.
Now, once is is released… my girlfriend and I are going to have a few days bespoken. grins
