Eh, I can already see an easy work-around to the $250 cap. If you have a super rare item, just sell it for an amount of gold equivalent to what you think it’s worth in dollars. Then sell the gold on the real-money auction.
So is the money from loot drops considered income or capital gains?

Neither. Just wire it all to a Swiss bank account.

I can see gold depreciate real fast once people max out their crafter.
Not sure about that - you haven’t seen the repair bills in higher difficulty levels. Some dev or another was saying gold is the drop he likes best just because of repairs.

well unlike in D2, your gear doesn’t get damaged unless you die.
so stop dying :)…

Would the gold amount still be capped like in D2 ?
You would be at max gold while you weren’t even in Nightmare, so what would be the point?

Yeah I’m also having a hard time seeing what I’m going to be spending money on. I imagine Nightmare will be difficult, but if it’s so difficult that buying gold with real money is actually a necessity to get through the game with your sanity intact, then I’ll be pissed off.

I only have one weekend of play to go by, but it seemed like the blacksmith is a huge gold sink. Even after you fully train them, it costs gold each time you have them make something. And I’ve read that the best items in the game are crafted. Add on that the repair costs. So I would imagine the demand for gold is always going to be there.
Probably like D2 gambling, except using the blacksmith and better thought-out.

I don’t think you’re lying but can you find the quote from the dev on this?

the main cost is upgrade, then you gamble on rare gears effects. but I will assume similar to diablo 2, best gears are actually unique drops which I serious doubt you can just craft.
then within the same unique gear, the difference between 150% damage and 175% damage will probably be a massive difference in actual value similar to D2.

True, but they’re saying in that newspost 250$ = 10 billion gold.
So how much gold do you really need ?

Don’t really have a link–it’s something I read at the diablo iii forums recently, that you can craft legendary items that are in some cases better than drops. Thing is, since crafting results are randomized, getting the ultimate crafted item won’t be easy. It will take a lot of trial and error, i.e., a lot of gold.
Not that it will matter much compared to the myriad deaths in Inferno mode, but there does seem to be some durability loss on equipment, even for characters who aren’t dying. It’s hard to notice in the beta because it doesn’t kick in until level 10, but after that point it was normal to have items take a little damage even if the character hadn’t died. Expect repair bills across the board at higher levels.

oh here is a link on a best lvl 10 blacksmith vs a legendary item
just base stats, legendary almost have 4x the dps…
The existence of hardcore mode means that it should be possible to play without dying much, making repair costs trivial if they’re tied only to dying.

Latest quote from Jay wilson, also so far no one has beaten inferno on the development team.
Hi Jay, quick question: is Inferno mode designed to be beatable by an HC character?
Not really, but please consider that as a challenge. :)
The last blue post I saw on durability said that there is a 10% durability loss on death, but that you will have durability loss during regular use too. Also that repairs at higher levels get really expensive.

I suppose they threw in the “increased range of gold capture” item stat for some reason… and that reason could be the arbitrary bullshit I’m thinking of (replaying content to grind gold, ugh).
