WarrenM is correct. Also, if you ARE that integral it’s time for YOU to start training other people who can back you up so you can take a sick day or a vacation day once in awhile. Seriously, it’s important.

Umm, I’m surrounded by a lot of people that when presented with a screen that has a button labeled “Projector On”, they walk 20 minutes to my office to ask “How do I turn the projector on in room 823?”

Training isn’t really an option.

Part of the problem is that the IT industry is over-saturated with good people right now so if I piss off the wrong person, I’m out and they won’t have a problem replacing me and probably saving money at that. Same thing if I ask for a raise.

And now I’m terrified that if I do take this vacation, they’ll have a problem and say “You weren’t around so we found someone to fix it and here’s your box of toys, we don’t need you anymore.”

Sigh, I’m cancelling the vacation.

You’re just putting emphasis on WarrenM’s original comment. you’re doing yourself a disservice in not taking a break.

You should use those vacation hours!!! If you weren’t there - someone there would know how to turn on the projector, or they will figure it out. Worst case, they will call you at home.

Anyone is replaceable. It may not be desirable/fun for the company to have to replace someone - but it’s the case.

Enjoy your d3 vacation :) I know if I tried taking time off to play d3 - I’d be put to work in the yard digging up trees/painting fences, etc — like Kelan

OK, so you’re worked like a field horse, under paid, and easily replaceable. You need a new job. :)

Vacation is there to be used. If you can’t, or aren’t allowed, to use it then you need a raise. A substantial one.

I think you are being excessively paranoid.

If you’re just sitting at home playing Diablo 3, then tell them they can call you if there’s a serious problem. Done. There should be zero reason that won’t work for everyone.

Have we already been sad about needing to start new characters for different regions in this thread yet?

Yeah, ibdoomed, your situation isn’t actually unique, but it is very likely percieved. The process of replacing someone is very expensive and time consuming, I doubt they would fire you for something like “being on vacation when we needed something” and if they DID you can bet you’d breeze right through the unemployment process. But they won’t. Don’t be crazy, take a day or two off and enjoy yourself. Like WarrenM said, just tell them you are available for emergencies.

That was known for some time - since we found out about the 10 character slot per region limit. So if you need an 11th guy (?!) you will have to connect to a different region.

I don’t think it will affect most folks, though. Really, only if you wanted to play with your overseas friends would it make a difference, and how many people are close friends with people over seas? Well, actually, I have a close friend in Japan, now that I think about it. Maybe more than I thought?

I think, with this post, you have neatly demonstrated that you desperately need a vacation. :)

These people are loony here. When I was in the hospital with pneumonia, mostly unconscious and unable to speak when I was awake, my wife called my boss to let him know the situation and that I was expected to be in the hospital all week. Later that very day, he called my cell because someone forgot their password, and I didn’t answer so he left a very angry voicemail that this was extremely urgent and I need to be answering my phone. I was barely able to keep my wife from calling and raving at him and getting me fired.

Anyway, I already called HR to notify them and got the expected “We’ll just see about that” response…

Start looking for a new job because that place sucks. I’m in IT as well and have been for close to 15 years now, you don’t need to put up with that shit.

I guess I could join my many friends around here that have been unemployed for 2+ years… but that means I lose medical insurance and my wife dies…

He didn’t say quit with nothing lined up. He said look for a new job.

I agree. If your posts are true, then you need to start searching for another company that wants you. If you don’t have trained backups that can help do your job, then something is broken at your company.

“We’ll just see about that?” The correct response to that is, “Go fuck yourself”. Seriously, find a new job.

Yeah, I’ve heard enough also - that place sounds like a very poisonous environment, at least for your department, so it’s time to pack it in and move on. Start looking now and grooming your resume, reach out and make some contacts and find something you’ll be happier at if possible, or at the very least a position that you can use your vacation time at.

ibdoomed, you seriously picked an appropriate handle at least. :)

As others have said, that place sounds like my previous employer… who I cannot name for a couple more months… but needless to say that place was a poisonous shithole. From the sound of it, you may as well have been working down the hall!

In any case, it isn’t worth it. As others have said, you don’t just quit and cross your fingers, but what you do is you start looking around. A lot of that looking these days is online, which makes it very convenient. Then you take one of your numerous vacation days or a sick day, do some interviews, and get the fuck out of that place. You’ll thank yourself later.

Erm… and Witch Doctors are kinda cool or something. Diablo 3 thread and all.

My wife is in a very similar position. But in her case she wrote a lot of the routines used at her job and so she really is the only one there for certain things. She is often called by he job when something goes wrong and she jumps on the computer at home to fix things. This will be put to the test when we go on a cruise in three weeks. Then she will be truly out of contact.

TL;DR: Take your damn vacation.

I’m torn between witch doctor, sorcerer and barbarian. I like pretty spells but I also like being able to take serious abuse.
