Even though I typically find achievements to be useless I do once in a blue moon get hooked on trying to get them. It paid off with Grand Theft Auto 3, at the launch they had an opportunity to get a very limited physical “Key To The City” for 100% completion. I made it with just a day or so to spare. It’s a pretty cool swag item, very well made, and extremely rare. I wish more pubs / devs would do stuff like that.

Can someone explain the witch docotors motivation for being a hero? As far as I can tell the WD should probably be on the side of the demons rather than a goodie. Summoning the dead, terrifying their oppoents etc all sounds like a case for being on the wrong side of the tracks.

Probably this (from the Diablo3.com sites Witch Doctor page) has something to do with it:

I signed up for the yearly pass the day it was available and I did not get into the D3 beta.

The annual pass had nothing to do with the D3 beta. It gets you into the Mists of Pandaria beta.

I don’t think Blizzard intended it as a “badge of you rock for being lucky” so much as a “Thanks!” for the people that actually provided feedback and helped just by virtue of being logged in and helping stres the system or putting in a trouble ticket. They can’t single out the actually helpful testers though, so they ended up just giving a little perk to the entire group.

They may not have intended it as a badge of honor, but they know people will treat it like one. “I’ve been playing since beta” is a common refrain to dismiss out of hand any comment from someone newer in-game. And now the condescending people have proof. Also it drives the completionists nuts to know there’s an achievement they’ll never have. It’s not an uncommon practice, but the tears aren’t unexpected either.

I don’t think it’s uncommon for people to feel slighted when they are told that some people are getting something (for doing nothing, really) while they cannot. Keep in mind that the people getting this thing already got what many perceive to be a benefit. That of playing the D3 beta for a much longer period than others. I think it’s more interesting that Blizzard didn’t foresee this reaction.

Not foreseeing this is saying blizzard is stupid and more than $150 million a month in income says otherwise. I’d bet it was a marketing managers idea to generate even more buzz, because my 96 year old grandmother has even heard of diablo3 and not from me.
