I’m sure DKD’s lack of faith in Blizzard’s skill set is keeping them up nights.

I just order D3 from Blizzard and I am pre-downloading the game client now to be ready for the 15th. I canceled my Newegg pre order. Yes, I am paying 10 more dollars to ensure I have the game the second it is available.
As a total battle.net n00b who hasn’t touched WoW since 2006, what is the Right Authenticator and from whence do I get it?
Followers: The total life for Followers is rounding incorrectly and is off by 1.
When THIS makes the bug list, there aren’t many known bugs. Of course, I expect that to change fast in 3 days and 7 hours.
There’s a free one for most of the smartphones (and many of the regular feature phones as well). Or you can order a standalone, keychain-type one for $6 from here: http://us.blizzard.com/store/search.xml?q=authenticator
I have the keychain one just cause I’m a big geek.
Thanks, surfed for it, found it, installed it, using it. Take that, black hats! I feel like I’m wearing a giant cyber-condom.
WoW accounts have been more valuable on the black market than credit card info for years. They’re safer and more efficient to convert into money, with no need to use dead drops or hire reshippers. Now that battle.net accounts can also be directly converted into money… hoo boy. Value just shot way up.

You didn’t read a single response to your bullshit arguments back then, and you’re not going to now. You’re just another twit that people have stopped tailoring their games for. Blizzard should be reading that Kotaku article and doing the opposite of what most of the people there are saying.
And the “lazy way out” would have been to completely copy the system they made in Diablo 2, but add respecs. Neither you nor anyone in that Kotaku article is coming up with a better system.
Ironic, because you’re the one calling for them to copy the design doc from Diablo 2, which everyone is already familiar and comfortable with and no one could complain about it. Instead they’re trying something new and different because they’ve come to the conclusion that it’s superior. I wouldn’t say Blizzard is a very innovative company, but this the perfectly wrong example to bring up.
Slavishly sticking to a decade-old template like a security blanket, despite it’s flaws, is not exactly creative design.
Anyway, if anyone cares, here’s Sirlin’s long explanation for why he thinks D3’s ability system is superior.
I think it’s been firmly established that opponents of automatic point/skill distribution don’t argue that D2 be copied wholesale, but rather wonder what could have been if a player-controlled system had been modified and tweaked to eliminate imbalances and “fuck yourself over” possibilities.
Exploring the player-choice space to allow for disparate playstyles in the context of permanent or semi-permanent choice might sound old school, but doing it WELL with modern sensibilities and proper balance is virtually untraveled territory. Alas, if only ;)
We can at least agree that there is no way to reconcile the massive variety afforded by the currend D3 system with “everything is perfectly balanced and equally viable”. The latter approach not only demands limited variety, it demands a certain homogeneity.
On top of that, the argument isn’t just about imbalance (although that’s obviously a big obstacle that has only been overcome in fantasy), but also about what is fun.
Don’t worry, we’ll be having the same discussions in another twelve years when Diablo 4 comes out and they move away from some of the current systems. There will be people who defend the old way and people who embrace the new way.
I’m an old codger, so I’m a fan of the old way, but I have to confess while playing the beta I never once said, “Hey, I miss the skill trees.” Or, “Hey, I miss identification scrolls.” I did say, “Hey, I miss randomized outdoor environments.” (Thank you Runic for including those in TL2!).
What is Diablo III? This is a pretty good explanation, though I can’t imagine anyon in this thread not knowing everything in here at this point, there is some new gameplay footage.
Where are you getting these rumors?
Through the usual black hat grapevines he haunts, duh!
Servers being reconfigured - game delayed until the middle of June.
LOL no.
But there could be up to a 40 second wait while logging on at release. Not sure if that was mentioned yet.
