That is not actually true. You can switch regions at will, but your characters are region-specific.
That said, I believe they said switching regions would be disabled for the first week, but I can’t find the quote now.
Edit: Here we go. Not necessarily a week, but we don’t know exactly when they’ll allow players to switch, just that it’ll be “some time” after the US launch. So if you try to play in EU now, you could be stuck there for a couple weeks, or you could be allowed to switch back to US tomorrow. Either way, those characters are stuck in the EU region, you can’t use them back in the US.
I don’t think that’s true. According to what I can dig up, you can play in any region, you just have to make new characters for each region.
Unfortunately, they’re not opening the global servers until all three regions are live, so it doesn’t work until we’re all online.
EDIT: what stusser said basically.

Ahh well, im off to bed, not looking like the servers will be back up anytime soon.
Good to know, but I’m still going to invest all my play time and effort in the Americas region since that’s where almost all of my friends and relatives are.
Any bets on how long it takes for someone to post that they beat the game? A day? Half a day?
At this rate, it’s going to take them that long to log in.
On the bright side, they’re sure to take all the lessons from their asia and europe launches and apply them to make the US launch flawless. Right? …Bueller?
they are back up, the status list is wrong fwiw
Maybe I’m not all that envious of Asia.
Here is the current situation for players from the ASIA region:
-Everybody with the digital version is getting “Error 12- No license attached”.
-In Korea, GMs have a thread going to manually flag digital accounts to allow them to play. Currently, there is no other way for Digital Edition players to play and they have to wait for the GMs to flag the account one by one.
-In Taiwan, there are no GMs around to flag accounts.

Smooth as silk, baby. No sweat.

Whether or not they’re up, the servers are being crushed, to nobody’s surprise. You’re going to be very lucky to get in any time soon.
Well, since I got mine on the WoW Annual Pass thingy, hopefully my account is already activated. On battle.net it says Diablo 3 is “active”.
Looks like anyone can preload the files: d3 downloader/installer
I’m installing now (after the 7.6gb download finished). It will ask if you have activated or not (which I can’t until I have the key), but the installer appears to be chugging along anyway.
Oh man… Servers are coming up at 3AM east coast time? I’m a sad panda, thought it was midnight! Guess I have to wait another day.

Have a shot of bourbon. Take a nap. Be strong!
Pausing my Blizz-hating for a sec’ to say that this is legitimately cool:
Sorry for the Kotaku linkage. Gist is that Blizz will refund the preorder price to anyone who buys a digital copy and submits proof (receipt) that they were a GAME preorder customer.
Yet another reason why Blizzard is the best games company in the world.
I just came in here to post that myself. It’s stuff like this that allows me to have faith in Blizzard when it comes to the always online requirement with D3. I’ve always felt like they are just about the only ones who really understand the value of a good reputation - never releasing a game before it’s done, never turning servers for old games off, always looking out for their customers in situations like this.
I’m still really glad that I pre-ordered my copy from JB Hifi, who I have a similar level of trust in, to lock in the price of $69. I’m heading off to pick it up as soon as I finish this delicious pizza!
