Sounds like a dying card pushed over the edge by a new game by either heat or voltage regulation issues. I’ve lost a couple cards that way, with similar symptoms. The visual artifacts at boot are a pretty good indicator the card is hosed.

Yeah really sucks. Because I NEVER crashed on a video issue before today, was playing seemingly more graphically aggressive games than d3 (witcher 2 and arkham city) with no problems recently.

You can always blow the dust out of the card/case and see if it stops freaking out, and maybe reseating it. My experience has been though that once you see the boot artifacts, the card is done. I lost once to Eve’s shitty Walking in Stations bullshit patch, which despite having no reason to seriously work a card, ran them into the fucking ground in its initial state due to being such a shitty engine. Of course, the root cause in that case was the card being happy to cook itself. I also lost one of those defective nvidia cards several years back, where certain components were basically made of old chewing gum instead of actual parts. In both cases, they exhibited weird black screens and restarts for a couple days, with graphical artifacts on boot, until completely going dead.

Yeah, I might try cleaning it. It kind of bothers me that a game like D3, which is not the most graphically intensive game, woudl crash it. I would have thought something like Witcher 2 would.

Anyway, this has happened to me before… I;ve been gaming since forever and have had Matrix/Voodoo/ATI and Nvidia cards crash on me. It was bound to happen.

Looks like I’ll be taking my day off shopping for a new card… instead of playing D3!!! Anybody think a GTX 570 is good replacement for a gtx 285? hmmm.

The GTX 285 served me well for 3 years… i thnk its the only vid card i never dared to upgrade for that long!
