And now my life is complete, for tonight at least.
Error 37 means “Get outside and jog.” Jesus that guy needed to lay off chips and soda.

I played the game about 3 hours last night, and while it was fun, I really don’t get the hype. Neither did I with D1 and D2 although I loved the videos from both games and the mood.
The game seems extremely streamlined, and almost boring in that while its pretty there is little substance to it, just hold down left mouse button and attack. Its not like its hard or anything.
I assume the “true” fans of the will probably say the real game is on some insane difficulty level, and I’m sure it is for them. I just don’t get the hype I must admit. I’m a bit sad now that I actually went ahead and bought it - I guess I expected a bit more…well, of everything - ESPECIALLY if its completed in 12 hours - thats just nuts.
Can someone share what it is they love about the game, and what will keep them playing for more than a week?
I think it’s the obsession for the loot what makes people play for hundreds of hours. In a way it’s with the loot how you really build your character, in a long term viewpoint.

I think what I’m looking for in terms of difficulty is something between regular and hardcore. Right now death means you have to walk for about minute, or if you’re playing with a group, you just get healed on the spot. I never worry about dying because it’s just a stun, really.
I don’t want to lose my character on death but I DO want to be encouraged to do everything to avoid it. Maybe if I dying meant the Act reset to some extent, so dying after an hour of play means you could literally have to replay that entire hour.
Edit: I checked out a stream of a team in Inferno now. They are dying a lot, but, they are still progressing because they just keep respawning and chipping away at them. And they only die to the rare mobs with the trait keywords, the regular stuff isn’t really a threat. The bosses don’t get any traits? I guess the endgame challenge is going to be finding the rare mobs, rather than beating the acts.
Just played for an hour after servers got back up. I think I’m 2/3rd way through Act 1, played about 3 hours total so far.
Game is very beautiful and well designed. It’s also way more of an RPG than I thought it would be in terms of story, lore, presentation, etc. But geez, such a beautiful game in the art, UI, all the details. Maybe the most beautiful RPG I’ve ever played so far, up there with Baldur’s Gate 2.
Shame about the terrible launch problems, this stupid DRM is so… stupid.
Also for those complaining about the difficulty, the people you see on streams doing inferno and so on now are the hardcorest of the hardcore. It’s probably more difficult than 99% of RPGs after all ;)
As for me, I ran into a large pack of mobs in Highland crossing (act 1) which even on normal was very scary. Jailer unique, pack of Waller champions, 2 trees and a bunch of regular mobs. Eek. I haven’t actually died yet, but this very, very nearly did it.
Edit: yeah, the torchlight 2 beta is way harder than D3 normal. That’s because there’s a selectable difficulty from the start, though, which wouldn’t really work with the way D3 is designed (just like D2). Also the difficulty in TL2 beta as it is now really constrains your options in terms of character building, if you plan on playing Veteran or Elite.

I have a question regarding selecting a previous quest. It says that you’ll lose your current progress. Does that mean that you have to replay the game from the previous point, or does it erase your progress just in the current quest?

I read (not sure if true), that at high levels the 10% loss of armour durability is expensive.

You have to replay your game from the previous point.
Not like it matters since you basically get to fast forward just by joining someone else.
It’s not all that useful to do, either, since bosses will only guarantee uniques on the first kill.
Act 1 complete, much longer than I expected. And very enjoyable!
Sleep time now.

Once you do die though, especially if are you in a party but even if you are solo, that ‘scary’ will go away because it literally sets you back by about a single minute. The little thrill of excitement fades fast when it doesn’t mean anything.
And I’m certainly not hardcore enough for hardcore. But I’d love a middle road.
If anyone was curious, they are doing the Skeleton King on hardcore right now: http://www.twitch.tv/justw8
One wipe so far at about half health. But he’s vastly easier than the rare mobs in that dungeon (which you can just avoid, however).
Yeah. It’s much harder than D2 though already. I mean I beat D2 hell pretty easily and I’m not hardcore at all ;) No TP-pot spam + vita stacking changes things dramatically.
The true test will be hardcore inferno, no cheesing!

I just wish all you “too easy” guys would quote the act and your level so we have some perspective on your point of view.
And I wish everyone would wait until they are on the next difficultylvl before they say it’s too easy. Because stating that while still on normal, is, well, just stating the obvious. I never had any real difficulty on normal with D2 right up to Diablo himself (except perhaps with Duriel on a sorceress/bowazon…), the ‘trouble’ and the fun started after that!
Other then that, after reading the last 10 pages or so (which are a very entertaining read btw, especially the part where everyone isn’t quite online yet…!) I’m even more happy about my decision to wait for a few weeks. Sounds like a great game, and I’m looking forward to playing it, but I’m glad I missed out on the agony of constant Error 37’s… :-)
Just to be clear in case I misunderstand the previous question/answer, there are essentially quest “bookmarks” you can always move back and forth between to when starting a new game, visible from the “Change Quest” interface when choosing a character to start a game with. Once in-game, though, you have to play from that point on; you can just back out and start another game further into the story if you want. You only lose progress between these “bookmarks”; they are always available once achieved as a selection when starting a new game session with established characters.
I’m of the same opinion as you, but I didn’t purchase D3. The always-on bullshit was more than enough to put me off. I’m watching streams on twitch.tv of people in Normal and Nightmare and it looks just like D2 but with fancy graphics. I suppose that’s enough for millions of people though.
I would post the animated .gif of Jackson eating popcorn, but to be honest you lot are handling the server fiasco reasonably well. Post screenshots of epic lootz!
Game’s great so far, if not massively so. The skill system is growing on me, though I still worry about longevity. It’s very flexible and you can experiment freely. I can see myself playing for months, but I don’t see myself coming back year after year (no reason to play again with the same dude) - except perhaps for new classes, or to get rich on the RMAH ;)
Beyond that, it seems very well balanced to me (normal is supposed to be easy, as we all know) - and Nightmare is a suitable difficulty ramp-up. Loot balance is much, much better than in Diablo 2 - and I feel I’ve got very appropriate gear for my level. They clearly made sure you don’t end up with super bad loot when facing nasty baddies. That’s one thing that was always a major pain in D2 - if you got unlucky. Something I felt often happened to me ;)
The one thing that disappoints me, that I didn’t expect, is that the areas are somewhat underwhelming. I kinda expected more from the atmosphere - but found the last act in particular somewhat bland and samey all the way through.
But aside from that, I can see myself playing this quite a while :)
Btw, I’ve had absolutely minimal login/play issues. I fully expected there to be problems on the first day - but there were none, really. I had one issue being unable to login the first couple of tries, but that’s nothing. I’ve had ~2 lag spikes in 15 hours, and otherwise 100% smooth sailing. That said, the full version still suffers from weird microstuttering/slowdowns at odd times. Some say it’s due to streaming content - but I don’t buy that, because I have a very fast SSD - and it doesn’t happen with “new” content, just seemingly at random. Pretty annoying until you get used to it. I’ve had the best results by disabling crossfire (6990 ATI) and playing just with VSYNC enabled in-game (no FPS limiting).
