But it did. It helps all of us not get shot by the 22yo hothead with a gun.

Just a normal headline these days. Go to Costco to shop, get shot.

And more fun. Probably just there to defend kids from the crazies.

So this happened a couple blocks away from our place in the middle of the day yesterday. Yay for guns. I assume it was a targeted drive-by but who knows?

It was most likely a member of our well regulated militia.

I think you could also tack on ‘Good guys’ and ‘Police’ to the White Men line as well, from the viewpoint of those that believe the others are true.

Who the fuck watches ‘NRATV’?

The craziest, most racist fucks around.

It’s weird how tragic events like kids being shot brings out the worst in some people. I vaguely remember the name ‘David Briscoe’ from the Santa Fe HS shooting last year. Apparently he was never there.

A coda

I’m left wondering, who the hell would marry that guy??

Also, it’s strange and horrible to see such a vintage-looking front page for a school shooting. These were becoming a problem that needed an immediate solution over two decades ago. Just another stark reminder of how long our government has been failing to protect us.

I dunno… the guy was apparently only 11 when he committed that shooting.

Certainly a terrible, fucked up crime, but at 11 years old? That’s not quite the same as being 16-18. I could be convinced that an 11 year old might not have fully understood what he was doing.

It’s possible that he could have been reformed. Certainly my girlfriend, who did social work with troubled youths, would argue for the idea that they can be saved.

On Monday, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee confirmed the 19-year-old shooter used a WASR 10, a derivative of an AK-47, bought in Nevada. The gun is banned in California, as part of the state’s assault weapons ban. But the shooter was able to go to Nevada and get the semiautomatic rifle anyway.

It turns out this happens frequently: Facing California’s tough gun laws — among the toughest in the country — people who want to obtain the weapons and carry out a deadly shooting just go to neighboring states, like Arizona and Nevada, with much weaker laws.

can states add a border gun check if the neighboring state has looser control laws? It may disrupt trade flow but might help incentivize the right behavior.

How would that work in practice? You really think there’s money to check every vehicle crossing the border into California? I think it also might be illegal, since you can’t detain someone without suspicion. It’d basically be NYC’s Stop and Frisk x 1000.

Yeah, more of a thought experiment on the legality of the idea.

Agreed that any implementation will be be costly - but then that becomes a question of whether or not that’s a cost that should be incurred for increased safety or not.

I’m all for common sense gun control, but instituting blanket searches at the border is not worth it IMO. I’d much rather shoot for Federal laws about assault weapons.

OK - What about you don’t do any searches but impose a border toll specifically based on the cost of gun deaths from out of state arms in both directions? Would that be legal?

The goal there would be to make interstate travel more costly unless changes are made.
