I think it was just a kalishnakov with a semi automatic lower receiver. Every AK you buy in the US is generally going to be like that.
Yes, ‘more to the story’, as always…
They cut CVE, that’s true, but it was only a 10$mil grant program trialing small projects around the country. Useful maybe, but just peanuts.
Blame the Republican congress under Obama who wouldn’t allow FBI and DHS to investigate anything they called “right-wing extremism” and squashed entire investigating divisions to make sure only Islamic terrorism counted. Still today, Islamic mass-murderers would be called “Terrorism” and are given top priority, but white American mass-murderers are at best only “Hate crimes” which are barely acted on after the fact, let alone prevented.
A long scary read from 11/2018

Semi-automatic just means the gun fires each time you pull the trigger. I think you might be thinking of automatic (which fires multiple times per trigger pull, until you let up on the trigger or run out of ammuniton).
Semi-automatic is basically just a normal gun these days. It’s the ability to convert them to automatic that everyone fights over/is afraid of.
To clarify; AK-47s are automatic by default. They need to be modified to semi-automatic to make them legal for use by civilians without special permits.

I feel like it’s probably an AK-knock off. Last I knew actual AK’s are pretty expensive.
Though maybe that’s changed, it’s not exactly a market I care about.

Pretty much this. Not sure why we even bother to have a thread.
Yeah, gun control has been dead for a long time. You’re better off just arming yourself.
I understand the difference; as they are combat rifles I assumed they were fully automatic and would therefore be illegal, hence the question.

It’s illegal to carry any automatic unless you go through the ATF, which isn’t an easy or cheap process.
Edit: Cross post with @ShivaX. French is quite a bit more succinct and to the point but reaches the same conclusion.
Longish twitter thread that puts trump’s white nationalism in context with the rise of white national terrorism. Also highly recommend reading the bellingcat link from @MikeOberly above that does a deep dive into the world of 8chan. The issue we’re facing is quite a bit larger than ‘just’ gun control.
I apologize for the second link and the huge images, but seeing trump’s ‘invasion’ rhetoric all at once really hits home. Sadly enough hate like this is nothing new, but now it’s getting amplified by social media and made even worse by the current occupant in the WH.
Oh god the comments.
Desperately seeking brain bleach.

Abbott did not discuss the possibility that the shooting could be a hate crime at a news conference with political and law enforcement leaders in El Paso. He said the Legislature this year focused on preventing school shootings and found a common thread in mass shootings.
“I can tell you that perhaps the most profound and agreed upon issue that came out of all of those hearings was the need for the state and for society to do a better job of dealing with challenging mental health based issues,” he said.
Let the spin continue.
Yeah, it’s a shame I live in the only country with both video games and mental illness.
