Yea this is where i’m at. The Republican party for too long has courted social or economic conservatives on one hand and the basest on the other - and eventually it was the latter that took the party over while the former two swallowed their pride (or burned their sense) and followed along.

If you think to yourself “Who can I vote for? Certainly not a Democrat?” and throw that R lever in the polls almost no matter who is running, then you on some level bear some share of the responsibility of where we are today, because you’ve been willing for decades to let the party radicalize without much of a whimper in protest. And eventually someone willing to sell out decorum, competancy, racial harmony, international stability, or truth based governance for lower taxes and less regulation starts to seem like part of the problem rather than collateral damage.

If conservatives look at Trump today and say “burn it down” - welcome on board, friend. If they look at Trump today and say “oh, sure he’s bad, but…” then you’ve just declared that that solution goes around you rather than through you.

It sounds ghoulish to say, but if US Rep from Ohio Mike Turner’s kid had been killed in the Ohio shooting, maybe we’d make a little progress. She was nearby or there slightly earlier, something like that. It would probably take the kid of each GOP Rep or Senator dying in a horrific bullet spray to get them to think about it. They’d probably still call for armed teachers or more good guys with guns but at least there’d be a chance.
