I still like my trinity of revolvers/shotguns/old-style-hunting-rifles, but more seriously, does not “magazine capacity plus firing rate” capture all necessary variables for drawing the line, if a line can be drawn?

Right but any time you have to reload it will slow down your firing rate, I would think. I mean, any weapon is reloadable, even a musket. The question is how frequently and much time per round does it take.

Actually my (badly worded) point was that you can fire six rounds from a revolver as fast as you can from a semi-auto. Reloading a semi-auto by dropping the magazine and replacing it does take some time. OTOH reloading a revolver can be fast if you use a speed loader and you practice. My point is that it’s a fine line.
And yes I understand that larger mags are an issue.
No, not really. Revolvers have double-action triggers, not simple release triggers like semi pistols. They are much harder to pull and fire because you’re manually rotating the cylinder with the draw and, as a result, much harder to shoot accurately unless you draw the hammer back manually. Of course you can draw the hammer back for the first shot, but not the rest. And that takes time, too, time a semi saves you.
Props to the FBI for getting this guy before he was able to kill anyone.

Yeah the British could fire their bolt-action Enfields at crazy speeds.
So “rate of fire” is a iffy metric since it can vary so much.
Here is some random dude on the internet. Now reload might be an issue, but he has no clips and doesn’t seem all that familiar with the weapon tbh. Also a side arm deals with that issue for the most part anyway.

VWe don’t have to be perfect in order to start. There is absolutely no reason we have to ban semiautomatic hunting rifles in order to start with high capacity magazines, tactical equipment that is literally never used in hunting, etc.
Get guns back to where they were 50 years ago. Then adjust more if that doesn’t help the problem.
I grew up with deer hunting. Kids brought their deer rifles to school. None of them had this military bullshit I see today.
I’m all for perfect, but not when it gets in the way of doing something now that could help. I loved New Zealand’s reaction. New regulation, right away. Fuck these morons. Take away their power fantasy toys.
I think someone said it earlier upthread but I can’t find it: ban all weapons with replaceable magazines, and all firearms capable of firing more than 6 shots without reloading, and any weapon configuration or adaptation that can fire more than one round per squeeze of trigger.
This should be the motto of civil government!
The actual measures being floated by politicians are mostly useless. Better background checks would not have stopped many of these mass shootings. I saw someone in Congress suggesting we ban the importation of assault weapons, which I imagine the NRA and their gun manufacturer sponsors would secretly applaud.
Exactly how many countries have full weapon bans? Not many. You don’t need full weapon bans for legislation to have an impact.
If they ban semiautos they’d better throw a few billion toward clay bird manufacturers, because I’d go break a ton of them.
