Why does every thread end up at

Ah, didn’t appreciate that, thanks. (Let’s win more seats!)

Only because of the absolute insanity regarding modern application of the filibuster.

Not your fault, I know, but this is insane really.

It just occurred to me that because of the filibuster passing legislation is just a few votes shy of having enough votes to pass Constitutional amendments. It’s… pretty weird that that’s the bar that has to be cleared just to govern, the difference between creating a governing coalition that can do what it wants and actually changing the fundamental laws is a handful of votes. Doesn’t seem like that was the intent.

It pretty clearly wasn’t. The Articles of Confederation had a supermajority requirement for legislation, and the founders saw how it had paralyzed the government. They made a conscious decision not to impose a supermajority requirement on legislation in the constitution for that reason.

I don’t give a single fuck what thirty ancient dudes intended.

Just y’know for the record.

This Washington Post columnist is trying to get the term “gun imperialists” to catch on. Yeesh. Gun imperialists? Dude, it’s the 21st century. “Gun nut” works just fine.

Sadly i think gun control is going to get tossed under the bus for the near future.

Only the brave among us progressives are going to admit this, but nobody has the slightest idea how to even pass the most benign gun control legislation without either losing Congress or causing a civil war.

The best that can be done, imo, is just working with pro-gun groups and going along with the very narrow, shallow improvements they would support, like what to do with reports of disturbed individuals. Stuff that sounds great on paper but effectively is a “white guy” solution that’s focused on disturbed white loner dudes and does nothing to combat minority violence in urban areas with handguns… but pro-gun groups don’t care about handgun violence among minorities, so there we are.

Well sure. COVID-19 stopped school shootings like no amount of legislation could. We have insurrections and pandemics to worry about. Since neither of those involved firearms I think it’s quite reasonable to punt on gun legislation and see where the 2022 elections take us.

I think the broader problem is that the gun control movement really doesn’t seem to know what exactly it wants. It wants to get rid of guns, and would like to live in a world like NZ or AU where the populace was horrified by mass shootings - and instead live in a country where, when a mass shooting occurs, the gun nuts buy out every semi-auto firearm they can lay hands on, hunker down, and wait for the Obama flag waving black helicopters to come get them. So effectively it doesn’t know what to do, and can only see pro-gun supporters not as potential allies but effectively mortal enemies. Certainly pro-gun supporters see them in that way.

So instead it focuses on things like milspec style guns like AR-15s… at which point the pro gun groups go “LOL, they only account for 0.9% of all gun deaths, libtards! FREEDOM!!!”, then the gun control groups say, ok, let’s work on handguns, then the pro gun groups yell “YOU CAN’T STOP GUNS CROSSING STATE LINES!!! Look at Chicago and DC LOL gun control is stupid.”

Which, to be frank, is all true. When you have a society where a significant portion of the population wants to spread guns as widely as possible in the wake of gun violence, and reject any attempt to regulate, track or otherwise account for them, you’ve basically lost the fight before you’ve started. Trying to do gun control in this environment is like trying to herd Elephants into a shoebox with only a shock prod and your shoe laces tied together.

That’s why (imo) gun control groups need to make pro gun groups feel like shit. You don’t want gun control? Fine. You get to drive next to billboards of gun victims and a finger pointed at your face saying you’re a piece of shit for not caring. The solution seems to be changing the culture.

I do think there is a legislative or even Constitutional way forward (as above) but effectively you need an ironclad political majority in order to do this, and it’s clear the GOP will break the country before they let Democrats gain a generational majority.

School and work shootings. I want to be optimistic and think a global pandemic might’ve helped adjust that trend but… the world obviously keeps forgetting about pandemics because other things keep happening.

“Man”. I get it, but it almost seems too much to call this 18 year old neckbeard drip a man.

Well, COVID gave us a nice break, but I guess now it’s time to remember what normal life in America is like.

He was fed up guys

Here’s my shocked face that the police somehow magically managed to take this guy alive, which I’ve been told repeatedly is very hard to do, the media is still using passive language with these acts, and now some guy is on video talking about this guy’s… bad day, the one where he straight up murdered people instead of just binge watch some old ass movie on Netflix like everyone else does.

“Fed up” is just extraordinarily bad. It’s what you say when you understand and even sympathize with someone. Jesus H.

Was yesterday the day when he murdered people?
