I feel like this is a good time to talk about literal kindergartners getting murdered and the response was to… actually allow conspiracies to run around that said it didn’t happen in addition to literally doing nothing about it. I mean if kindergartners aren’t going to stimulate change, nothing else will.

I mean, Black Panthers is the obvious object lesson here, no?

Yep.

Of course there wasn’t a gunophile bloc back then.
Most people think the process this time around would be: no laws get passed, cops just shoot more black people, gun nuts are happy, racists are happy.

Demographics is probably the only solution, and it’s a long term play and it’s not guaranteed, given the deep entrenchment of the Church of the Firearm here. Like voter suppression, eventually the people trying to screw the majority will wind up on the wrong end of that gun.

As easy as the thought process is, more guns = more shootings, I must admit the “other side” makes emotional sense. Hearing a daughter describe how someone shot her father in a restaurant and if only other people had guns there, it wouldn’t have happened, it “feels” right.

So I can see how for someone who doesn’t particularly know any other way, the thought of get rid of guns is going to be a hard sell.

Actually, black gun ownership is on the rise, as well as the NRA pandering to black gun owners. Hell, they even hired Colin Noir as a spokesman. I’m a minority dark skinned gun owner, and some of my friends and acquaintances are gun store employees. Most staunch 2nd amendment rights advocates want as many gun owners as possible regardless of race or ethnicity. A friend of mine who is a veteran gives free firearms training to the lgbtq community.

Philando Castile undercuts most of that pandering, imo.

NRA: Buy guns, but if the cops murder you for having a gun, we’ve never heard of you.

This I’ll mostly agree with though. I just don’t count the NRA as being in that category.

Yeah, good read! Thanks.

We spend every Christmas romanticising the story of a young boy who wants to play with a rifle.

Jeez, when you put it like that…

I guess we’re all lucky Iowa didn’t legalize pot, because Nebraska is fucking useless.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

It’s those damn commas that do us in.

Another one, in my general neck of the woods. A little one. A mini-mass-shooting, if you will.

America’s coming back, I can feel it!

Back in 1967, California passed a law, the Mulford Act, that repealed an earlier law that allowed open carry of loaded weapons. The governor at the time, none other than Ronald Reagan, was all gung-ho for the law, as was the NRA. According to this Atlantic piece,

Republicans in California eagerly supported increased gun control. Governor Reagan told reporters that afternoon that he saw “no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.” He called guns a “ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will.” In a later press conference, Reagan said he didn’t “know of any sportsman who leaves his home with a gun to go out into the field to hunt or for target shooting who carries that gun loaded.” The Mulford Act, he said, “would work no hardship on the honest citizen.”

My how times have changed. Well, no, not really. The thought of armed Black people still terrifies right-wingers. Even though most of the mass murderers are, um, white.

Great article. For those of you who might be out of free Atlantic articles, this link is broadly similar.

Emboldened by their calm exchange with the police, members of the group began to follow police cars and dispense legal advice to African-Americans who were stopped by the police while legally carrying their weapons. The group referred to these activities as “police patrols.”

“Bobby Seale and Huey Newton used the Second Amendment to justify carrying guns in public to police the police,” says Winkler. “The Panthers would stand to the sidelines with their guns, shouting out directions to the person. That they had the right to remain silent, that they were watching and that if anything bad happened that the Black Panthers would be there to protect them.”

~~

There are a fair number of leftists that believe gun rights are minority rights. e.g. https://twitter.com/LatinoRifleOrg

This is a hell of a thread.

Something about these details.

I thought the point of the guns was to feel safe, you need a yacht too?

The point of guns is you can make a shitload of money selling them.

Wait, you’re telling me Don Davis lied to me!?

Human.

Garbage.

Not even kidding. Is there a hole deep enough to bury this asshole who enriched himself literally on the backs of dead children? Let’s find out!

Now, hold on. Putting him in a hole would pollute the earth. Gotta be a more environmentally friendly way to do this. Catapult into the sun, maybe?
