Yeah, all the boss fights are dumb. Pity.

I’m curious what happened between Madison and Mike after this? Did they make out or something? I’ll not be able to find out since I didn’t choose her.

Your answer will be a spoiler to some :)

SPOILER

No, she disappeared, saying that she couldn’t bear the thought of people dying because of her and not wanting to have that happen again.

I actually liked the first boss fight (maybe because it was new, maybe because I didn’t yet have chain shot) with the sneaking up on him and then having to run around while under fire to the missile launchers.

But the Russian boss. Screw that guy. I especially hated the fact that I was able to sneak up on him with Shadow Operative and it didn’t give me the option to straight up kill/takedown him. :(

Spoilers
Your fade-to-black with Madison happens before the museum mission. For me, it happened during my playthrough where I chose her to be my handler for one of the missions in Rome.

But that isn’t all. See the spoiler thread for some finishing touches.

So I finished the game: 20 hours of mostly incredible fun. One of only two games this year that has drawn me so much into the world that I was sad to leave it. The other one being Metro 2033.

SOME SPOILERS

Positives

Level design. Compartmentalising the gameplay might not be realistic, but it helped make the game fun. Knowing that each section I approached was a hermetically sealed problem to be solved with my collection of tools made me feel like I was in control. It was also addictive.

Moment to moment play. The sneak, pistol and karate chop combination were very well implemented and satisfying.

Story. Smartly written, mostly great characters, suprisingly well held together despite the complexity, and a satisfying ending. One of the best game stories I’ve experienced.

Music. Fantastic.

Flow. I felt like a special agent sneaking about. It was great. I didn’t want this feeling to end. They could have made me invincible - the challenge for me was keeping the flow. Being caught was the punishment for failure, and even if I didn’t die I didn’t want to have that happen. I hated the alarms going off - I’d hack them even if I was safe.

Negatives

Interface. Ugh. What a mess. It would have been nice if they’d implemented a power wheel like in Crysis to easily navigate the different powers I had. Having to press Z then Q then Z then Q then Z then Q to perform combos like stealth, chain shot, fury took away from the flow.

Bosses. I hate these in most games, and I was pleased that in AP I could kill them easily with a chain shot. But they were silly. Alan Parker, the old bespectacled guy with a pistol, one shotting me at the end was just one example. I mean I can take on a room full of trained guards with kevlar and assault rifles and kill them all, but old man with glasses takes me out with one shot from his pistol?

Difficulty ramping. Actually this was done well througout the game, but there were some bad spikes. The worst for me was the helicopter at the end. I must have died 30-40 times there, where I’d hardly died at all before. It didn’t help that the last level was long and difficult, so I’d used up most of my grenades and stuff already. I absolutely hated that helicopter section.

Forced action combat. I know they were trying to mix up the gameplay, but if I’ve gone stealth and pistol then I don’t want to have to fight like I am armed with an assault rifle.

Gameplay variation. By the end I was starting to do the same thing for every gameplay section: sneak, chop, chop, find a good spot to see everyone, chain shot anyone still alive. A lot of the stuff I used in training never seemed to present itself to me as an opportunity, like gas tanks to blow up and placing shock traps on doors. The AI never seemed to want to move outside of tightly defined areas, so using the sound generators just seemed to alert the guards, but rarely brought them where I wanted them. It would be nice if the gameplay could be varied a bit more, without forcing me into combat that my build isn’t designed for.

The first boss was much better designed than the other ones as it could be beaten with other methods than just brute force. I’m guessing, or at least hoping, that’s how they intended to design all of them, but couldn’t because of time contraints.

Yeah, and almost all games with an episodic level-based flow like this have some kind of “helicopter” section. It seems like it’s mandatory to take the play style you’ve learned and then throw it away for a poorly implemented one-time mechanic with punishing qualities.

The particularly cool (awful) thing about that goddamned helicopter is that missile damage is apparently reduced at long range. So if you cleverly kill all the troops and find this one protected perching position behind a truck, you will need every last missile launcher and might even run out if you miss once if the helicopter happens to swerve. But if you run a little forward to shoot at it, it only takes 3 or 4 missiles. Why? I dunno, maybe the warheard gets tired if it has to fly more than 50 yards or something.

I agree, I never blew up a gas tank or placed a shock trap the whole game after the tutorial. I threw some semi-effective grenades at active turrets, but then discovered that just shooting at them with the pistol was at least as effective.

** MORE SPOILERS **

Yeah, the bosses are ridiculous. And he’s more sensible than most – at least he relies on turrets and things! The only way this fight really makes sense though if is you make happy with him and Marburg. In that case, the ‘boss’ is to defend Parker against waves of soldiers while he copies the Alpha Protocol files for you.

Finished AP moment ago. I have to say it was a pretty fun ride, overall. I felt I was able to make consistent decisions for the character I wanted Mike to be without playing for some sort of “optimal” outcome (which I don’t know if there actually is). And playing as that Stealth/Pistol/Sabotage character was probably the best choice I could have made, slowing the game down from run-and-gun so that I could fully enjoy it for story and characters.

Have to say, definitely a rough gem and well worth the $7.50 price tag.

I did blow up a gas tank in the Saudi mission where you assault the terrorist camp. Going the assault rifle route, so guards knew I was there. A couple were crouched behind a truck in the courtyard when I was up above them and it just suddenly hit me… I remember this from the tutorial mission! The explosion killed both of them, it was the most fun use of a grenade I had all game :)

Ok… so I am about to do the subway level in Taipei and I assume after that I will complete Taipei and will be back to Moscow again to take down Brayko. My problem is that I only have 80K and that Advanced Stealth Armor that I unlocked in the Yatch mission cost a bloody 150K! I don’t think I can get the difference from just the subway level. What have I done wrong? Am I shit out of luck? Should I just blackmailed everyone for money (not that I could now, because I don’t have any earlier saves).

I loath facing Brayko without that armor. On an unrelated note, I finally achieved Brilliance… so maybe that would help!

I didn’t find Brayko that big a problem. I just performed a five part chain shot to the head with steel bullets and he went down instantly. He may have taken a nick before that, but it wasn’t difficult. Not sure I even had the advanced stealth armour then either.

Chain shot is silly overpowered, though. If you don’t have that skill you’ll find him rather difficult.

You can sell off some goods, perhaps. The gold-plated AR from the Saudi boss nets you 40K. Guns you don’t equip can bring in 5K total. If you’ve been thorough in searching all levels, you should have a crapload of inferior armor and weapon mods that you’ll never equip, most of which bring in 1-2K a piece. And your current armor is worth 4K (level 1) or maybe 15K (level 2), but don’t sell that until you’ve verified that the proceeds will be enough for the stealth armor.

You don’t need any armor until the advanced stealth armor, since for a stealth character the civilian attire is the most cost effective upgrade especially as compared to handler stamina bonuses and the like. If you’ve been buying incremental upgrades and/or not selling all of the loot you acquire (including ammo for whatever pair of weapons you are not using), that might explain your budget shortfalls. I usually do the yacht mission first to unlock it, and then all of the easy money missions (CIA headquarters, G22 warehouse) to make sure I’m acquiring as much blackmail as possible every time the opportunity comes up (and I always blackmail no matter who I want to be friends with).

Either way, remember that only money carries over to your next playthrough, so sell whatever extra stuff you have before the last mission. It will have an alpha on it and be pretty obvious.

I have done all these and yet I am left with 80K.
I believe the reason for my poverty is that I bought all the intel before each mission - I think they are a waste of money, but it’s too late now. Here’s hoping I could breeze through Brayko!

A lot of the intel pays for itself or is simply a reasonable investment, the cost savings are with ones like the sniper rifles, the maps (except for the ones that have more items, and definitely don’t forget the map for the mansion in Rome), and the reduced security (although that will make some levels a decent amount harder than they were.

Wow, I really had a great time with this over the weekend.

It’s a little silly and the writing isn’t as perfect as one would hope but, on a second playthrough, the power of choice really becomes apparent. I’m still playing a goody two-shoes but am really looking forward to playing through as a complete jerk who kills everyone.
