Alpha Protocol

No, I think people who hate it generally actually think it’s bad for reasons that were not apparent to me. And/or experienced bugs I did not.

I just picked this up (360) and got to the first mission in Saudi Arabia. I guess my situational awareness is poor because I keep alerting the guards in spite of trying to be stealthy. It just seems there are places where it’s not possible to climb ladders, drop down, etc… without somebody seeing me and raising an alarm. I got a bit discouraged after dying 5 times on the first mission, but I’ll give it another shot tomorrow when I’m less tired. I’m no savant when it comes to stealth games, but I usually do pretty well with them.

Stealth can be kind of rough in the really early game because you haven’t got the points to invest in the appropriate skill(s) very much at that point. It does get easier.

Just finished it. I really enjoyed it, though it was far from perfect. The checkpoint system was rough - you can’t play this like a typical stealth game, sometimes to keep your sanity you need to bite the bullet and accept that you tripped the alarm and move on. The one way doors were really annoying as well. And I accidentally let my GF die in the final mission because I went left instead of right. I might replay that mission.

If you enjoyed Deus Ex:HR at all, you should really play this. It’s not as good, but still fun.

Repost for all the new finishers – you should check out some of the endings and scenes you missed on youtube!

Malkav is right, the first couple of missions are pretty tough. It gets really easy really quick though if you use the right upgrades coughChainshotcough

Cool, thanks. I’ll keep with it.

Haha, I did the same thing and didn’t realize it until the end. There was a LOT going on at the end there.

Sorry to hear that. We were talking about that just 2 pages ago. Almost makes me wish we did full-fledged OPs for all the common FAQs and warnings like at SA and PA and GAF.

But not quite.

Torn between the 360 an PC versions – much difference between them? Both are about $10 (though I may wait for a Steam sale or something if I decide to go PC).

I’ve played both and vastly prefer the PC version. I’ve beaten it like 5 times now (replayability is very high) but I can’t even get a third of the way through a single playthrough on the 360. But not through any fault of the games I suppose, there’s just a section I had zero trouble with on the PC that I simply can’t get past on the 360. I’m just not as good at these kinds of games using a controller.

I guess it just comes down to your preference, performance wise I had no trouble with either.

Gremlinclr, that’s great feedback – the section you have difficulty with, what type of gameplay is it? Free aiming? If so, I really suck at that, and should probably go PC.

On the other hand, the hacking minigame sucks with the mouse.

Wouldn’t lockpicking suck as well on PC? IIRC it was pressure based which works great with 360 triggers, maybe not so much on keyboard/mouse.

Lockpicking is trivial with mouse and keyboard. Also, the PC version supports the 360 controller, so platform choice need not imply control choice. (Personally, except for hacking, I think mouse and keyboard make for the best controls for the game, but that’s me.)

Thanks for the input, going to go for the PC version (that it supports the 360 controller seals that, best of both worlds). I may wait for a sale, though, it is $20 on Steam now and $7 boxed from Amazon, but I’d really rather have Steam.

I’d be willing to help you out with that.

A few tips: pistols’ special move is basically cheating, especially when augmented with just a couple points to get the instant cooldown refresh skill

Russia has a lot of bosses and can be a bit frustrating to do first as a first time player, but you can always do a few missions and then swap areas

Thanks, but I’m good. Waiting a little bit is OK anyhow since I’ve got a crushing backlog to work through as well. Add on top of that XCOM, Torchlight 2, and Assassin’s Creed III coming out in the next month or so and the winter sale is practically right around the corner. Friended you, thanks for the invite!

Yea, it was just trying to aim with an analogue stick at an intense moment of much firefighting. But like people have said, since the PC version supports a controller go with that and use whichever you like more.
