Alternative to Nero?

I wouldn’t mind Nero if i could pick it up for around 40$ for a digital download, like i purchased my antivirus. But 80$ is a no sell. It seems like though its the only one capable of doing even routine tasks like making a bootable CD.

Are there any alternatives to Nero or any places i can pick up a legit copy for less? Its frustrating OEM CD/RW drives don’t even come with full software.

Depends what you want to do - if you just want to copy and burn discs, there’s plenty out there… Blindwrite, Alcohol 120%, firewriter, etc.

I have Nero Vision Express when I got my DVD-r drive and had nothing but problems with it. It would frequently crash or reboot my computer while it was doing it’s DVD authoring stuff. It burns discs fine, but that’s about it. It’s entirley possible I’m the only person who has problems with it, but yeah, sucks for me.

Is there an alternative DVD authoring software out there?

Either that, or is there a way to burn VCDs onto DVDs? Nero won’t allow me to do that, which is disappointing, since I got a DVD-r drive in order to fit 12 hours of video on one disc.

I use Deepburner ( http://www.deepburner.com/ ) at home and at work. Does everything I need it to.

Why not just get that $8 OEM deal that JMJ linked a while back?

No software is going to let you do that – that’s not how it works, unfortunately – assuming you want to be able to play it in a regular DVD player. If you’re wanting to play it on a computer, now, that’s easy. You just burn it as a data disc.

Is that, you know, legal?

Once i ordered a Linux program CD and it had stamps from Latvia. I saved the envelope since those stamps were kind of cool, and i doubt i’ll be getting other letters from Latvia anytime soon.

Technically, no. It’s an OEM version of the software meant to be sold with hardware. If that bothers you, buy a mouse or something too. I wouldn’t expect the po-po to be knocking down your do’ for buying it, though.

There is this freeware program: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Nero OEM (basically nero express) from here: http://buycheapsoftware.com/

I got a copy from them and had no problems. I’ve always liked Nero but I too couldn’t see paying $80 for the full deal when I’d never use half the crap they toss in there.

That’s disappointing. I was using Nero to make simple menus for the VCDs. I’ve never made menus for DVDs before, but I guess this is a good time to learn.
