Amazing Grace

This is the most depressing book I’ve ever read. I don’t really know what to say about it; the writing is good, I guess, and he talks to an interesting collection of kids.

200 pages of kids with AIDS; single moms with AIDS; apartment complexes full of rats which burn down all the time; drug dealers who ironically are the only thing keeping the district economically afloat, provide a wierd form of social stabality; churches where only one member has a car; elementary school classes held in bathrooms, next to the urinals; decrepit hospitals.
