My Pixel 3a XL has been doing this weird thing lately whereby my Apple AirPods work fine to listen to podcasts but when I try to make a phone call they don’t work. I go into the BT settings and disconnect/reconnect, same thing.

Anyone else seeing this sort of thing? Running pretty much the latest version of Android since it’s a Pixel after all.

Update: rebooting the phone fixed it. Nothing else did.

Suggestions for a <$350 unlocked Android (AT&T compatible) that supports an SD card and has sprightly performance (relative to the cost, of course)? Not particularly concerned with camera quality. The bigger the screen, the better.

Pixel 4a?

Hmm … thanks. No micro-sd slot but decent default storage, I suppose. Sadly I would have to slow-boat it, since it’s not available via Amazon, but I can suffer through that.

Thanks for the wirecutter link. I glanced at that page but just saw the $800 OnePlus and noped out.

Yeah I think its hard to find expandable storage slots on a new phone these days, unless you are paying big bucks for the top end phones.

Can you not buy it straight from Google?

Or bestbuy, they show me as being able to get it by mail on 9/30/20.

You know just thinking back even 5-6 years, its amazing the quality and level of performance and storage you can get from a phone now for $350.

Yeah, I’m just without a phone so was hoping for some pickup or prime options, but seems like this one is the best-in-class option, so I’ll exercise some patience. Thanks!

Tmobile are doing an offer with a trade-in of an old phone giving $500 back against a Samsung s20 5G FE. I think you can even trade in a phone as old as an s7. It also worked for my Pixel 3a XL that only cost me $480 less my trade-in at the time, so the new phone is only $200. Might be worth taking a look at.

Yeah, if you have something trade-able, the FE is a HELL of a device. But if you’re without a phone entirely, it’s pretty pricey.

you could probably find a s7 on ebay for $100 so you can get the shiny new phone for a total outlay of $300.

Me trying to do a trade-in.

So is there gonna be a Pixel5XL or something along those lines?
I’m getting to the point where I want to replace my Pixel2XL, but I want to get a top of the line phone… but I also want it to be Google phone because vanilla android is the best.

Or is the Pixel 5 that phone? It seems like the Pixel 5’s processor seems kind of meh for a flagship phone.

Sounds like they’re scaling the Pixel line back from being absolute top-tier to something more similar to the Nexus devices of old. We’ll know more in the very near future.

I got my 4a a couple of days ago and i love it. No SD card slot thought. I ordered 3-4 weeks ago from google. It is fast enough to comfortably surf and load up the Ring videos (which are very slow for some reason).

I am still using my Pixel 2, and for most things it’s fine. I wouldn’t mind wireless charging, though, as my car has it, and of course any improvement in camera quality is welcome when I switch phones. Most of the recommended phones from the websites that do that sort of thing seem to not have wireless charging, and the ones that do seem to be flagship type phones, which are usually bigger and more costly than perhaps I need. I love the Pixel largely because it came with no bloatware and is free of all the “enhancements” most manufacturers feel compelled to inflict on customers. The 4a is nice but no wireless charging makes it silly for me as an upgrade.

Also, I have a lot of authenticator/two-factor stuff running through the phone these days. With a new phone, how does that carry over? I have moved the Blizzard authenticator around easily enough, but what about the Google app? So much of my stuff requires it now that I get antsy about shifting phones.

These days you can either do it with backup codes or via scanning a QR code on your old phone with your new phone. Just make sure you don’t get rid of your old phone before you get the backup codes. Be sure to do the same (whatever the steps are) with all your authenticator apps.

For lastpass have to login to website, export a QR code, and take a pic with that with lastpass on new phone

Banking passwords don’t transfer.

google auth transferred I believe

I used a USB C cable to transfer from old phone. Old phone was … I forget, some cheap Motorola.

The transfer seemed to get more logins than before (with the exception of one phone i’ve used stock Nexus/Pixel lines exclusively)

One last thing, they changed some OS stuff and to swap apps it’s a touch slower. It’s now a swipe which is annoying. It is slower than before.

IIRC Steam Authenticator was obnoxious. The last two times I’ve done it, I couldn’t find a way to avoid getting locked out of selling items on the marketplace for a week or two. Which normally wouldn’t bug me at all, but one of those times was right at the start of a summer or winter sale and I couldn’t offload all my cards accumulated from the free daily clicks; the lockout basically extended the duration of their sale value, hah.

Steam Authenticator thankfully still works on my OnePlus One. I don’t know what I’m going to do when that thing dies though. I should be not-lazy and look into it.
