That is a depressing discount.

Better off going the Pixel 4a route for $350. Decent battery, storage, and screen.

Any news on the 4a 5G ? I see its up for pre-order on Google.

Cnet did a side by side recently:

I’m thinking about getting my wife a new phone for Christmas. She has a Samsung 7 that she has dropped roughly 1000 times. It is really beat up.

I’m trying to compare the S8, the S9, and that Pixel 4a. I’d appreciate opinions on the matter. $350 would be able as high as I can afford to go.

4a no question, double the storage, comes with Android 11 now, and 3 years of OS upgrades.

Well, with the Pixel 4a you’ve got stock Android, prompt security and OS updates for (IIRC) 3 years. I bet the Samsung phones can’t boast that.

Yeah. At that price range the 4A is a much better deal. The Galaxy S20 FE is also fantastic but won’t go quite that low even with Black Friday sales.

The switch from the Samsung ecosystem might be annoying for her, but I don’t like the feeling of recommending older devices that don’t get routine updates, even if they are replacing something even older.

She would never even notice the change from the Samsung ecosystem.

Thanks for the feedback!

Oh wow that sucks. I have been holding out on the Pixel 4a for a discount for black Friday but if the Pixel 5 is only getting $50 off then I guess the Pixel 4a is getting nothing. Better hurry up and buy it to get the most out of it before it becomes obsolete.

Honestly, I’m more inclined towards the 4A 5G over the Pixel 5.

There are a few compromises: less RAM (IMHO not an issue), no wireless charging, no high refresh rate over 60 Hz, and a smaller battery.

However the battery life is still great on the 4A 5G, it’s a bigger screen and has a headphone jack. It’s got the same processor and the same camera.

I’m pretty thrilled on both phones that they’ve brought back the rear fingerprint reader.

The 4a 5G is definitely much better value unless you really want the extra features. I definitely wanted the battery, the wireless charging and the IP68, and I preferred the smaller screen on the 5. And with the free headphones deal for early purchase, even the 5 is pretty good value compared to eg the Samsung FE.

This feature is present in the current Pocket Cast, but it’s buried deep in each individual podcast feed’s settings (gear icon), under Auto Archive -> Episode Limit. Then, go back up to the feed, and 3 dots -> Archive all. From now on, new episodes are not archived, and the limit will kick in when not archived episodes exceeds your limit.

I don’t think there are any global settings for this, but holy heck, their settings are not organized at all!

They really are not >:(

But they used to be, before they updated the app to make it less user-friendly.

Luckily the old version of the app still works well on my OnePlus One. I just fired it up this weekend.

I really need to move on from my Galaxy S7. I’ve been eyeing the S20 FE UW 5G and the Pixel 5 (on Verizon). I’m tempted to save some cash with the Pixel 4A 5G or S10e, but I tend to keep my phones for a while and don’t want to start out a generation behind, even if that gives me the coveted headphone jack. Batteries on the latest S20 FE and Pixel 5 seem much better and I am grudgingly willing to trade that for the headphone jack at this point, I guess. I am leaning toward the S20 FE but am a little worried it will feel too huge, though pocketability matters not as much these days under lockdown living.

Oops, I hope this is not too late. I’ve read many opinions that picks Pixel 4a 5G over Pixel 5. They both have the same processor (765G) and possibly the same camera. The 5 has more RAM (8GB) than the 4a-5G (6GB). And the 4a-5G has the headphone jack!

I’m planning on getting a new phone soon, my first choice being the Pixel 4a. Should I be considering the 4a 5g? I don’t like the idea of the extra cost but I’m wondering if that will future proof the phone more. On the other hand I figure I’ll be lucky if my phone still has a decent battery life after 3 years so maybe having more RAM won’t end up being a great advantage. Oops I see the 5G has the same amount of RAM. Well that pretty much settles it. I’d rather have a smaller phone anyways.

I’m a little pissed that I missed the note that the pixel 4a 5g is the new naming scheme for the “xl” line. I grabbed a regular 4a and I can’t stand the thing, compared to my 3a xl it feels super tiny, and I only grabbed this 4a to try it out because I thought there were two flavors, one with 5g and one without. But it’s actually a “regular” and “XL” model but only the bigger one comes with 5G basically. Bastards. Sending this back.

Also, I haaaate the selfie camera taking screen real estate.

Well, that’s basically every phone these days.

And it’s the sixth dumbest thing in phones, after 1) dropping user-replaceable batteries, 2) slide-out physical keyboards, 3) user-expandable storage (in some brands), and 4) headphone jacks, and 5) adding curved screens.

Is the seventh dumbest thing rounded screen corners? Because this phone has that too. :/
