Authy makes it difficult to migrate to another service, plus Aegis is open source.

I’ve updated the youtube link in my original post as it didn’t have the correct timestamp where he talks about it. Sorry about that.

I am super lazy and just use the Google Authenticator.

Unless Aegis offers a Windows app, it’s a non starter for me. I’m too lazy to actually type codes, I need to be able to copy / paste my codes into Windows apps w/ MFA.

I dunno I’m super happy with Authy.

Ditto. Even the middle schooler is willing to use it.

So I’m thinking of actually picking up an original Surface Pro Duo off Amazon. I know the Duo 2 is much better but it sounds like they’re really fixed things up with the original Duo and I’m mostly interested in using it as a super portable Onenote notetaker and not a phone and of course they cost about 1/3 of what the Duo 2s cost. What I’m wondering is can I unlock it easily from Canada? I would be buying it from the US. ATT has an unlocker site Unlock a Phone or Device - AT&T Device Unlock Portal (att.com) and it all looks pretty straightforward, but I’m concerned there might be some wrench thrown into the works because I would be doing it from Canada. Any thoughts?

Even if I couldn’t unlock it, as long as I can update the OS without a SIM that would be fine with me. I have no intention of giving up my phone.

*On second thoughts, I could get an iPad mini for $649 CDN plus tax so maybe buying a Duo is a bit crazytown.

My wonderful nephew offered to trade in his old iPhone to help get a discount for me, and I wound up with a Pixel 6 Pro 256 GB.

It’s FAR more phone than I intended, but the trade-in made it palatable. It’s excellent, but at the same time quite annoying to turn off “convenience” aspects. FFS, er, I mean "eg - " the power button is set by default to bring up Google Assistant instead of the standard shutdown/restart options. To turn that off, I had to navigate to gestures, because apparently that’s what hitting a button is (?). Still, amazing for watching shows and phenomenal camera compared to what I’m used to.

Well, I ended up buying a used Microsoft Duo off the Facebook market place. It looks in pristine shape. It’s the 256GB version and it cost me $450 CDN which must be like $30 US? It may be first gen but damn does it ever feel quality. I know this thing got a bad rap when it first came out but they must have patched it up really well because i haven’t had any problems yet. Having two screens almost feels decadent. I pondered about going with a Duo 2 but that would have cost me $1500 new with the taxes. The camera seems decent to me, I’m not terribly picky. I’m only planning to use the camera to take pictures of my students’ learning so that doesn’t really matter and I’m really glad there’s no obtrusive camera bump. I’m not actually planning to use this as a phone, but rather as a very mini computer in my class. It would not make for a very convenient phone if you needed to use it one handed which is pretty much how most people most of the time use their phone.

I read some comments about how it had been steadily patched and was much improved in usefulness over the launch incarnation. It does look cool. Smaller than I thought too, unless you have really big hands :)

I’d be very interested to get your thoughts on it after you’ve used it for a while. If it weren’t for the cost, and the fact that I know that only MS apps (and maybe a tiny handful of others) will properly make use of the dual screen, I’d have found the Duo very tempting. I’m constantly frustrated by how bad phones are as computing devices, but I don’t want to carry a tablet everywhere, and the Duo at least in theory fills that gap. At that price, it’s almost worth picking up on a whim.

Actually I have ridiculously small hands. I was never self-concious about it though until Trump was elected. LOL.

After 3 years of using my current pixel phone (& even considering the prior 3 android phones), how on earth has the autocorrect (Google?) Still not learned my surname? I need to type it in completely every single time!

Weird. Mine does pretty well with mine (which is a long, non English name and definitely not somnething commonly spelled) and my family’s.

In Android News, My OnePlus 5T was getting super long in the tooth and slow. And Pixel 6 Pro’s are now available for reasonable prices (less than the 6 when it launched) on eBay. So I took the plunge and am loving it so far. Gestures are taking a bit of getting used to. But the cameras are a revelation compared to the below average ones on the 5T. The phone is so fast too. That’s another 5 years of phone ownership sorted for me. I’ll be back in this thread for the Pixel 11. :)

Here’s a weird one. My google keyboard has English and French as keyboard options, and the setting are all in English, but the actual UI of the keyboard is in French. So for example, when I hit the arrow button to access the icons on the top row for gifs and whatnot, all the options are in French. And when I hit the microphone button to do speech to text the written prompt I get is in French (”Parlez maintenant")
What in the world is up with that? I can’t find anywhere in the settings to change that.

Oh I solved it! I had to hit the “world” icon at the bottom of the screen. Apparently it’s been on French the whole time and yet I’ve been using my keyboard mainly to write in English.

Oui, oui!

Correct. I have both languages enabled on mine too. And once in a while, I hit the world icon while typing, causing the layout (QWERTY <-> AZERTY) and default language to switch. It’s easy to do.

Today I learned you can fix a non-working USB-C port by scraping out a layer of compressed pocket lint with a toothpick! Excellente!

HELP needed! Suddenly my Pixel 5a with 5G phone is basically non-responsive and the screen jitters. I can’t even operate the gestures interface. I somehow managed to get Malwarebytes installed and ran a scan and nothing. WTF, it’s less than a year old.

And even a factory reset has failed to fix the problem. Hello warranty repair/replacement.

This is the way. Sounds like something got fried.
