Thank you, I just failed a temptation check and ordered it. Apparently I’m upgrading.

I checked the trade-in value of my Pixel 6, and it’s $479. That’s just $20 less than the price of a new Pixel 7. My phone is in great shape, but I’m wondering how likely I am to get the full trade-in value. Anyone have experience with trade-ins to Google?

I got $275 for a Pixel 3 XL that I dropped into water and therefore can only charge wirelessly (the charge port stopped working when I got it out of the water).

They asked if my phone can turn on, if the display is damaged, and if I can factory reset. I outlined that, yes, the phone turns on, the screen is free of defects/damage, and I can factory reset.

I got my Pixel 7 Pro and waited. A few weeks later, I got my “trade in kit” which consists of a box, a prepaid return label, a small padded envelop and extra tape/stickers. Out of an overabundance of caution based on trade-in horror stories, I recorded a video documenting my phone’s condition and how I packaged it up. Then I dropped it off at the post office.

It took about a week to get from my place to a facility in Nashville, TN. And for like two weeks, its status was unchanged. Just “going through the network.” Then one day, I got an email saying my trade-in has been accepted, the phone matches my description and I will get $275 back on the card that I bought my P7P with.

Apparently, the trade-in people just pick up the phones in bulk from the USPS, hence the package doesn’t really get “scanned” by USPS and is stuck in “going through the network to your final destination” purgatory.

Besides the crazy amount of time waiting for the trade-in kit and for the phone to be accepted, my process was just fine. I’ve done a similar trade-in for like, my Nexus 6P, I think. But there are also insane stories of phones either just being lost in transit (hence my unease/panic when the status went unchanged for so long), or people being informed that Google disagrees with the trade-in. I’m pretty sure I checked “send the phone back if there is a dispute” but the horror stories have indicated that isn’t a guarantee either.

So my experience was just fine, but there’s enough “yikes” stories in reddit and the like to put a big ol’YMMV.

No. Same requirements. On a reboot it requires the pattern/pin 1st but then works w/ biometric until the next reboot. I don’t know why it would ask for the pattern as a follow-up unless the fingerprint unlock didn’t actually work?

My guess is that you didn’t actually succeed at unlocking the phone but merely woke up the screen by touching it. That would explain why it is asking you for the pattern.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Will try to do some testing!

Good idea, I’ll do that as well. Thanks for the info, I ordered the new phone so we’ll see how it goes.

Sorry, missed my notification on this thread. Thanks to everyone who responded.

They were, so we ended up going with a bit more expensive phones for the kids, the Moto G 5G. They should be here shortly but won’t be setting up until Christmas, so no feedback until after that.

My wife and I will be moving to Pixel 6a as soon as we get a case in. Anyone with the 6a that wants to comment on what case they’re using? Seems like Spigen is the big common thread in my research, but I wasn’t wild about the look of them.

I was really close to moving us to the Pixel 7 when they lowered it to $400 through Google Fi, but decided we would save that $200 for now. It will be interesting to see if they put the 7’s on sale next year with the great trade-in values on the 6a. I understand a lot of people are going from the 5a and or 6 to the 7 with no or very little cash.

I’ve used Spigen for 3 of my phones - 2 Motos and my Pixel. I didn’t have any issues until my Pixel fell of my bike mount onto the street - I was barely moving. Screen didn’t break, but the screen stopped working. I only had a couple of minor drops with my Motos and they came out OK.

Now in my pocket: the Samsung Fold4. The hardware feels great to use. Very luxe (my main is a 14 pro max).

Good browsing and typing. Will see if I’m able to adjust to Samsung’s Android UI. I think it actually crashed while thping this, and now i have a different (non-split) keyboard than the one i started with (split).

Edit: turns out i needed a bunch of updates. Interesting device.

I am typing this on my ZFold 4. It is painful when I have to use a regular flat phone. And yes, there is a lot of updating necessary when you start with this phone.

I’m using the Adblock Plus browser. I think i need to bite the bullet and transfer my Apple password vault to something I can easily import or use here.

So far I am loving the browsing on this form factor. And app usage when they work fullscreen.

So far I’m using the Fold4 as a tablet – not a phone. I haven’t used my iPad Pro much at all since getting it, but I still carry my iPhone with me everywhere. With Messages and general ecosystem things (Photos, Airdrop), I don’t see that changing. The hardware is so nice, though. I love using it.

Just out of curiosity, are you a professional hardware tester or reviewer? I’m struggling to understand why one person would own a Fold4, iPad, and iPhone all at the same time.

You’ve been here as long as I have – do you really need to be told why enthusiasts buy things? :-)

I work in the mobile space, but I was a nerd long before that.

I was watching the new Zfold 4 TV commercial during football games and was impressed at the custom apps they showed that actually used the fold out form of the Fold4. Is that common? Is it only Samsung that makes app for this specific phone, like I was expecting, or have a lot of 3rd parties also started updating their apps to take advantage of the foldout form factor?

Like, Microsoft Word, for example, can you open a document, and unfold the phone and read the document and edit it full screen?

Microsoft make the Duo, so I think a lot of Office apps have dual screen versions for Android, though I don’t know how compatible they are with the Fold specifically.

Yes. Pretty much anything you open on the smaller screen, when you unfold it, it is waiting for you on the larger screen (full screen). PDFs, Excel sheets, Word, etc.

This is my pain. I want so badly to just use the Fold, but all that Apple stuff keeps pulling me back.

Hey, no judgement from me! It just struck me as an odd combo of devices so I was curious if it was nerd lust or professionally prompted :D
